A friend of mine is looking to pick up a CCW piece. He's been without one for a little while and is looking to fill the void. He sent me an email asking for advice, but I don't have enough experience with the pistols he was asking about to give solid advice.

Here is what he asked:
"I am trying to compare the Kahr 9, the new Kel-Tec FP9 and the Taurus PT111 Pro. They are different prices (450, 300, and 325 respectively). What do you think."

Anyway, what advice to you have for him concerning these three guns? I'll send him a link to this page so he can be keeping up with it. Thanks for your help.

Let me add this, he likes to carry small of the back.
 
Kahr.

My PM9 is a great IWB carry, okay pocket carry in certain pockets.
If he likes carrying SOB though and will never pocket carry, a Kahr MK9 might be the ticket. A little heavier, but would make a nicer range gun and would carry pretty easy on the belt.
 
Kahr PM9 is very nice and it shoots great. You could actually use it as a range pistol and have a hard time complaining, where the Keltec is a painful proposition after the first mag.

I am Flashpoint's friend from above. Money (to the $450 mark) is not an issue. I am not real fond of the Kel-Tec but the dealer really recommended it. I like the Taurus for the safety. I really like the size of the Kahr. I've never been a "15 Rounds plus two extra mags" person. The single stack doesn't bother me. I've never shot either. I have had a S&W .40 full frame that was too large for my liking. I've had a Bersa Compact 9 that I liked but it didn't shoot as well as I'd like. Thanks for the input so far.

Anymore help would be greatly appreciated!
 
Almost forgot! Curently have and carrying a Steyr M9. Haven't shot it yet. Got it used from a friend but it feels too big as well.

Stryker, welcome.

Dude, you gotta get to the range! I'm not being critical here, but it isn't the best idea to trust your life to something you don't even know if it's gonna go bang when you need it to!
 
Sorry. I agree. I have only had it four days. The friend that had it shot it recently. Know it bangs, just don't know how it bangs in my hands. Thanks though.

btw, the Kahr is a CW9 to be exact.

Is there any way you can shoot them before you buy? In this scenario, you get what you pay for. Well, at least between the Kahr and Keltec. I have never shot the Taurus, but after shooting some Taurus revolvers, I feel like you get what you pay for there too. Your absolute best bet would be to test fire each obviously. If not that, then try dry firing each side by side and I think you will probably know a little bit better at that point.
 
Also consider the Sig 239 if you like single stack pistols. Little bit more expensive new, but if you look around, you can pick them up for less than $450 used.
 
Go for the Kahr. You will not be disapointed. I just bought one about 2 months ago. Took it to the range and even my buddies that are wheel gun guys could not believe how accurate it is. I did lots of research before I bought mine and did not find any bad reports about it. If you do choose this gun realize that you need to cycle atleast 200 rounds through it (400 would be better) to break it in. I did experience a couple of failure to feeds during the first 200 have probably put an additional 300 to 400 with out any failures. It is the sweetest pocket gun I have ever shot. The Galco ankle glove works like a champ too.

I have a Sig 239 in 9mm and it is really growing on me. I used it in a recent instructor training course at SigArms Academy and I have *zero* malfunctions in 1000 rounds, and that was using lead-free ammo. The only problem is if I shoot with a thumbs-forward grip, my thumb will sometimes depress the slide release and keep the slide from locking back on the last round.

I used to think the 239 was too small for my hand, but after shooting it for a week at that class, I was wrong. I'm currently trying it out as my possible new CCW gun. I'm alternating it with my current rig, a S&W Model 65 with a 3" tube, and seeing which is more comfortable to carry all day.

CW9 is a steal at $350. But I have a Kahr PM9, and since wish I'd have made it Kahr steel instead.


I'd recommend getting an MK9. Then you could call it... "The Spine Cruncher":

I did it!

I read about thiry different reports on different web sites last night. I read all the posts up to this morning. I got a couple of Private Messages regarding some safety issues.

So, I went to the store and bought the Kahr. I am going to the range tomorrow to run through the break-in period. My wife likes the weight and feel. It's comfortable!

+1 for the sig 239.. I don't like any of the ones in the original post. :uhoh: I know you don't want other suggestions but since someone already mentioned the sig, YES I agree it is higher quality in my humble opinion;)

Good choice. I don't think you will be dissapointed.​
 
Never owned a Kahr but they have a good rep. However, having owned two Taurus 9mm's (Millenium Pro & 24/7), I recommend them highly. Both extremely reliable firearms! Also, if cost is an issue, they are reasonably priced. :cool:
