I need some help buying a new gun. Financial help is always good, but what I would like is opinions. I am being allowed to buy a gun to celebrate new baby on the way, also it will be the last for a while with diapers and double day care costs. Don't get me wrong, I want a new gun, but I don't know whether I want something serious or fun.

The front runners are a Glock 19 or a single action revolver.

Revolver - Have a Taurus snub, but that's it.

Centerfire semi auto - Have 2 1911 style

Rimfire semi auto - check

Rimfire rifle - check

Centerfire bolt rifle - check. Nothing scoped, but I don't hunt yet so not much need for a scope.

Centerfire semi auto rifle - check. Have a few evil guns.

Black powder - None

Single action revolver - none

Shotgun - none. I need one just don't want one. not other reason.

Milsurp - check. Mausers, mosins, sks's.

I don't have a large collection and I do want more, I guess since I want them all I can't just pick one.

My budget is around $500 Maybe a little more for sights and leather if I go with the Glock.

So, now its your turn. Buy me a gun! :D

To celebrate a new baby, eh?

Well, lessee. The two possible "reasons" I can think of, with a new baby in the house, is to 1) protect the family, or 2) to have something I could use to teach the kids how to shoot when they got a bit bigger.

So with reason 1 in mind, I'd either go looking for a new carry gun (if I didn't already have one or if I were less than pleased with the one I had), or a shotgun for home defense.

With reason 2 in mind, I'd be looking at a bolt-action .22 rifle, youth sized, or an appropriate .22 revolver. Probably the latter as you can get in an awful lot of really enjoyable shooting while waiting for the kids to get big enough to join you on the range.

Those are great suggestions, Pax. Ones that I have considered.

Fortunately most of those bases are already covered as I already have one 3 year old son.

As to reason #1, I already have 2 1911 style guns and the Taurus snub that are my carry guns. As stated, I know that I need a shotgun, and that they are one of the most practical for home defense, but I just don't want one right now, don't know why.

As to reason #2, we already have a youth rifle in .22 and the .22 pistol. Although something like a single six may have merit with reguards to this reason.

It sounds like you have a lot of bases loaded with what you already have.

I don't have a shotgun either and never really felt the "need" for one.

IMHO it sounds like it is time for a fun gun. Everyone should have at least one Single action revolver. Easy to fit in the budget and a lot of fun to shoot.

Now, if you agree about the revolver, but the Glock keeps pushing itself to the front of your brain.......well....no need to resist, just go get the Glock. :D

Well, if all your other bases are covered, and you really, truly don't want a shotgun (not even a .410 for the kids?) -- well, then, get a Glock 19 and a good range holster. Heh, maybe you can get into competing in GSSF matches. :)

Don't want a shotgun, rifle bases seem covered, carry handguns too...

Since I'm partial to handguns, I'd recommend a a wonder nine. The Glock 19 is a great idea since you won't need money to tweak it, and the caliber always allows more ammo buying on any budget. To up the ante a bit, have you thought about getting a long-slide handgun? Something gamer, like a long-slide ported 9mm Glock. Not too practical for carry (but that doesn't seem to be a pressing issue here), but a gun like that would be fun at the range and the porting would make the introduction for the kids a bit easier when the time comes.

Good luck, let us know what you go with!

Hmmm lots more to ponder.

A long slide glock didn't occur to me. Very intriguing(sp?). I'll have to get a friend out to the range and try his G34.

A shotgun would be the logical choice since that is lacking in my small collection. It's also very practical and, I agree, something no home should be without. It just doesn't feel right at the moment, and I'm not feeling very logical. :D

Maybe If I look hard enough, I can find a decent used single action in .45LC AND get one of them used G19 that CDNN has for so cheap. Hmmm wonder iffin I could slip two guns into this deal.

BTW Pax, I love the quote. In addition to your posts, your quotes are always the best. Is there a situation for which you don't have a quote?

I'd get a single action .357, probably a Blackhawk. I just got one and it's pretty neat. .357 is what I shoot most of so I might be biased!

If it were me, and I had a $500 budget, I'd buy a used 98% S&W. Maybe a model 15. These are beautiful, classic wheelguns, and are available at good prices. If you shop carefully, you should find one easily under $350. (Too many people want magnums or magazines, I guess.). Next, I'd buy a nice cherrywood presentation case for $69.95 from S&W. Then, I'd head down to my local engravers and have a brass plate with my new baby's name and date of birth made and fitted to the case. Wipe the gun down with corrosionX, place in a KleenBore anti-corrosion bag, wait 18 years, and give it to my son/daughter on their birthday. My daughter gets a nickel model 15-4 in a few years...

Well, I'm pretty sure I don't have any quotes about fruit flies.

pax: In college biology lab we did genetics experiments with fruit flies (something about their eye color). They reproduce quickly and are fed a banana mash. My favorite line at the time was:

Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.

[Guess you beat me to it.]

DWS: Buy something to protect your family. It will be years before you will have any time for recreational shooting (with or without a young'un).

Well I've made my decision. I'm Not going to buy a new gun. Not at this time. I have instead decided to use the money that was alloted for a gun on ammo, reloading components for current guns, and training.

It was a difficult decision, but in the end it came down to not really being able to decide between a single action and the Glock. I can never have too much ammo. Also, I have had no "formal" training and it is high time I change that.

Thanks for all the help and opinions.
