Help me pick my first shotgun

First off, that book is fascinating and I'm having trouble putting it down.
:D

I know folks that have multiple copies, have plum wore out that book, taped pages, notes in margins, rubber bands and paperclips.

Some of these folks were shooting before I was born...still learn something everytime they read it.

I don't hunt, so there are some sections I won't be referring to so much, but I'm still reading it cover to cover, and I can definitely tell there are a lot of things I'll be coming back to.

Your primary choice is barrel length.

You want no more than 18 1/2 inch for HD.

You need a short barrel to be truly comfy swinging it around,

covering your arcs of fire,

for HD.

Beyond that,

personal preference.

I DO like the Rem 870.

The Turkey has the 21" barrel. Good tradeoff in length and it's RemChoke. Now, I've seen recommendations that a good set would be an IC and a modified to go with the extra full it comes with. Is that a good choice?

Yes.

The patterning board will tell you if you need to fine-tune further.

Dave, or sm, or another of our seniors will tell you if I've missed something.

Just didn't want to leave you hanging. :)

Might I suggest a Mossberg 500 Combo?

#54169 12 gauge SECURITY COMBO, Blued metal finish, wood stock and Pistol Grip Kit, Ported 28" VR Accu-Choke field barrel w/ 3 choke tubes and an 18 1/2" cylinder bore, bead sight security barrel. ...MSRP $347

Who has something similar in 20 Gauge... hey, I'm old and like the low recoil.

The cheap Remington loads, marked "High-Velocity" (1 oz) and come 20 to a box, have a sharp recoil to them, (for me) I have had great luck with Gun Clubs and they come 3.58 a box for 2.5 dram 1 1/8. I like the 1 1/8 oz. I need to go shoot some patterns.
And I think the 870 WINGMASTER is the best shotgun made. Ever. Don't care for the Express, not for shooting's sake, but just because they are fugly. They are head and shoulders above any mossberg. Not to say that the mossberg is a bad gun; I'd rather have the 870.
