Help with a 6.8 spc build?

I am going to be putting together a 6.8 AR soon. This will be my first build project and i have a few questions. Do I need to get a specific upper made for 6.8? is there a specific bolt for it? Where is the best place to get barrels? I was wanting to do a flat top with flip up rear and front. The only differences between a standard AR upper and a 6.8 is the bolt and barrel. You will also need different magazines. Parts for just about any AR or AR variation are a little scarce at this time. I have found a lot of excellent information at http://www.68forums.com including lists of manufacturers for various parts.

I don't know if it is still in play, but there is a recent thread in the "Group Buy" section for 6.8SPC barrels.

I bought a mini 14 in this caliber a couple of months ago. Haven't shot it yet because all my usual ammo sources are backordered. I'm getting some reloading dies in, but all sources I've checked for brass are out of stock as well. Hopefully this caliber will be soon on the agenda for re-stocking.

I just recently finished a 6.8 SPC build of my own. I ordered a barrel and bolt from ar15performance, seems to be good quality stuff. I used PRI waffle mags and the rest of the upper half used YHM gear. The scope I got from a friend and the mount came from a local gun shop. The bottom half is just your typical M4 style lower with a Pardus stock and MIAD grip (with trigger guard). Its also fitted with a surefire G3 light and a single point sling. Overall I built the rifle for hog hunting, my friends and I have used similar setups (chambered in .223/5.56) that work well enough.

You can get a barrel and bolt from White Oak Armarment, but it will take about 14 weeks. CMMG has some 6.8 barrels, but who knows how long that will take. I have Pri mags and they are good, but very pricey. Good luck.

You can get some 6.8 barrels from me by the end of March. They are made by E.R. Shaw, same outfit that made the Ko-Tonics/Cardinal Armory barrels. The group buy is closed, but you'll have a hard time doing better than my retail prices. I also sell YHM parts a lot cheaper than you'll find elsewhere.
