Hi folks,

Back in the 50's, my father was an officer on the Louisville, KY police force. He left the PD after several years and worked on the Louisville fire department, where he spent the rest of his career. He was injured and retired off the fire department.

My sister and I decided after 9/11 that we wanted to display these aspects of our father's career as a tribute to him and the men and women who lost their lives at the WTC.

My sister has a lot of his turnout gear from the fire department, and has a neat display at her house. However, due to a burglary, most of his PD duty gear was taken or damaged beyond repair.

I'm trying to gather police duty gear from that era, but I'm having a hard time finding stuff still in good condition. I could also use some help with the details, to make sure I'm gathering the right equipment.

So, can any of you folks offer suggestions or pointers? I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks,

Michael

Check with the Police and Fire departments he was a member of and see what help they can provide.
Ebay might have some of the items you want, but be careful, lots of unscrupulous sellers who will claim something is of an incorrect era...

You can also get an American Flag flown over the U.S. Capitol in his name.

Shadow boxes are a great way to display such items, and are very popular in the military community

Gun shows for old police holsters. Most of them were black basketweave (or they could be smooth black) but you'd better check with Louisville PD to find out what they issued. Every agency is different. A short billy club or a modern sap (round style and not a flat one) was pretty common (but again you should check with Louisville). If the hatpiece didn't change, see if you can buy one of those for the shadow box.

Thanks guys, I've been trying to find a contact with LPD, but since they are merging with Jefferson County to form Louisville Metro, I'm having a hard time finding an in.

I'm afraid they will get rid of any old equipment they might still have as part of the cleanup for the new merger.

Michael
