Hi,
I recently aquired a Webley Rev. I am having trouble identifing. Can Someone help?
The frame is marked on the left side Webley Patent Mark 1 in an oval.To the right of that are (2) 6 pointed stars. To the right of the stars is C arrow pointing up and N. Above left grip panel is't marked with a crown over B8 over B then a broad arrow over WD then a crown over B over 9. Left side of trigger guard is stamped with a crown over B over 85. Right side of the frame is unmarked. Front of frame is marked with serial # in high 400's as is the barrel and cylinder. The grip panels are NOT numbered underneath but appear to be from a Mark ll frame. Although they do NOT fit just properly, they do show much wear. The barrel measures from the face of the cylinder 5 3/4 in. long. Barrel APPEARS to be a Mk VI bbl with a removable front site blade, however it is not marked MkVI. Left side of bbl in front of cylinder wings has C arrow pointing up N. On side of top strap at face of cyl is marked with a crown over BV.On right side of bbl on side of top strap at face of cyl it's marked with a crown over NP than a crown over BP. The cyl. is marked with the C up arrow N and Crown over BV and crown over BP. As with most, this rev. was converted to 45 ACP. I have a MkVI cyl in original 455 cal and it dose fit the rev. and turn and lock up properly. I suspect this was imported back in the 60's when most imports were converted.
1. The mark 1 frame conversion to what appears to be a MkVI bbl appears to be arsenal done, especially since frame, cyl and bbl numbers match.
2. is C arrow N a Canadian mark?
3. Does it seem likely this was converted from MkI for WW1?
I have had several Webley revolvers over the years, in fact I still have a converted Mk1* for 45 ACP. I have never seen a model such as this. The workmanship on it is excellant. It has only traces of blue finish left.
Any help with this would be appricated.
Thanks

Webley question from Nored

Hi,
I will try to put pics on. Won't be able to do so for a couple of days though.
Thanks,
Ed

Webley made service revolvers with longer barrels than the standard four-inch, so your MK. I may be original.

However, the overall description suggests a "parts" gun.

I'd not shoot powerful loads in pre-MK. V guns, as they weren't really intended for smokeless powders.

P/S. The current, "Handloader" has a Webley article by Al Miller. It is interesting, although Miller makes errors in his writing on military guns, and this was no exception. His MK. VI has almost no finish left, but at least he gave it a loving home... :)

Outa interest I'll post (not for first time) my venerable MkVI - I rebuilt after totally prep'img externally and then cold blued - far from perfect finish but if kept wiped down with RIG or CLP cloth it survives quite well. On cocking, S/A is a bit unreliable as too far with hammer travel and it tried to lock up somewhat, D/A is good. Had to replace mainspring and barrel catch lever springs too

I only use light loads with 230 LRN casts - in Fiocchi brass - it has as most know who fire them, a very odd and distinctive report sound.

Help ID Webley Mk 1

I will try to put some pics of this rev. on. I thought about the suggestion of a parts gun, however the serial # 491 matches on the frame, bbl and cyl. There are no signs of ever been any other serial No. on it. NO Marked out numbers.

Help ID Webley Rev.

Hi Lone Star,
Prior to asking for help on this site, I thought of the parts gun theroy, however, it does NOT appear this rev. was previously numbered. Can't imagine a Mk1 frame with no serial # laying around for years. Have had Webley rev. in past with replaced parts, old serial No. was crossed out and new No. restamped. This is not the case.No signs of old No. being ground off. I thought all Mk1 rev's had an interigal front site, half moon type as on my Mk1*. I also understand Mk 1's were black powder rev's. I know previous owner did fire 45 ACP and 45AR rds in it. I suspect the smaller bullet dia. helped with the higher pressure. Also if the bbl is from a MkVI it would be for smokeless powder, however, the shorter bbl baffles me. My thoughts for this and my Mk1*, which was also altered for 45ACP was to attempt to load 45AR cases (I have a good supply of late manufacture) with Rem 255 Gr. .454 bullets for factory 45 Colt with .455 Webley charges. This may work. Any help would be appricated. Also I did post some pics yesterday.
Thanks,
Ed

nored - wish I was more of an expert on these pieces - there is not much I can offer.

I see now in the pics just how early this appears to be - the cylinder is very short compared with MkVI and lacks the grooves for bolt travel, and, the grip style seems to remind me of early Webley Fosbury. But I have nothing useful to add sadly.

I am certain there are folks here who can help - maybe just bounce this alive now and again to try and catch 'em!

Looks like a Mark I grip, but the cylinder (larger cylinder bolt stop notches), hammer and frame (cylinder release system) are definitely not Mark I. Have a 1892 Navy model (all matching) to compare it to.

Used to be a website that had pictures of Mark I - MArk VI's, but don't know if it is available anymore.

Help ID Webley rev.

Foe what is't worth, the Webley trademark on the left side of the frame extends forward of the front end of the cylinder, as opposed to my Mk1* that has the trademark back further almost centered with the cly flute s. Also when they installed the cly release, the large bottom screw you remove to remove the cly. is drilled through part of the trademark. Enough is visible to make out that the frame is a Mk1 with NO *. Also, the backplate has NOT been replaced with a hardened one as on my Mk1*. There is NO signs of a NEW plate being installed. Does the C, arrow pointing up N indicate Canadian property? That is stamped on the left side of both the frame and barrel and on the cyl. Also on this rev. the bbl as is the one on my Mk1* are nitro proffed. Crown over NP and a crown over BP.

The Sept. issue of, "Shooting Times" just came in the mail, and Paul Scarlata's column is on firing a Webley WG Model with new production .455 ammo from Hornady! (Page 16)

It shot groups of 2-3 inches at 20 yards.

Hornady .455 ammo! Who would have thunk! :) Super!

Help ID Webley

I just read the artical on the Webley Green and Hornady Ammo. Sorta make we wish I hade the Webley Green I aquired about 20 yrs ago. Was a great rev. and fetched a great price at the time.
