Remington 22 LR cartridges

With the Remington low end line of 22 LR's (Thunderball or something like that.) I get a fair number of misfires. On examining the cartridge rim it's been hit fair and square. I rotate it, put it back in, and hit it again and it goes. Obviously a case of the primer being unevenly distributed around the rim.

I have seen the ".22 missfire" with my plinkers also. I remember several times rotating the case to the fourth position before it fired. It doesn't matter when its just tin cans,but if I'm hunting I like them to go bang with the first strike. Generally, I'm more comfortable with ammo that shoots first time...I don't like fooling around with missfires.

Thunderbolts are total crap. I chronographed some and got 150 FPS spread. Way too erratic.

Usually a tighter bullet shoots better, not worse. The old target shooters would hammer bullets that were oversize down the bores of their muzzle-loaders for serious paper punching. Most 22s have a clear preference for one make of ammo. Obviously yours isn't keen on the Remingtons but you can't say that's true for all K 22s. Just yours.

I DO like the Remington Golden Bullet in semi autos. The sub sonic hollow point has been good to me also. Now I know why the Winchester nickled case stuff shucks so easily, and prints so well in my S&W 4 screw K-22!

I've gone through a lot of .22Lr ammo shooting in Bullseye matches, and I will never buy Remington .22 again. Between the misfires, and erratic performance in both my .22 semi auto pistol, and my SA revolver, I've come to the determination that it's total crap. CCI Blaser isn't quality .22 ammo either, but I haven't had a fraction of the problems with that stuff, as I've had with the Remington.
For quality Bullseye Match grade .22Lr, I've found PMC Pistol Match, and the Winchester T-22 has worked the best for me.
I'm planning on getting a 6" S&W 617 (new model K-22), and will have to try a few different brands / types of .22Lr to see what works best for this gun, but I know I won't be trying the Remington.

Now with that said.....I shot against a guy this year that used nothing but Remington bulk .22 ammo in his Browning Buckmark, and he kicked my a$$ in every match.......go figure...!!!

I used Remington Target in my 617 with no problems. I still have a couple bricks of the stuff, it's probably ten years old now. I wonder if they changed it?

My poor experience with the priming was with Remington's cheap stuff, not their better grades.

My Remington misfires were all due to insufficient seating in the revolver chambers.
First strike seated them, second fired them.
They were not Thunderbolts, but the regular HS hollowpoints in that loose 525 pak.
They simply don't FIT in an old tight K-22.
My 9422 ....loves...em. Shoots tightest groups with em. Better than even CCI Green Label.
But the revo.........picky.
The holes are too small for Remington.

I can use Rem in just about any other gun with no problem....but not the M17.

My PREFERENCE for "all around" is the CCI std vel. blue box.

It seems best for ALL the guns, (though some like other brands, all shoot better'n me)

My EXCEPTION is..............FEDERAL.

I will NEVER buy another Federal .22 LR in my life. Have returned some to factory and still got bad ones. THEY won't fire every time.

I've had good experience with Federal Lightning in a Ruger MKII. Only FTF once every 1500 rds or so. And they're only $8 brick at KMart.

I can't figure Remington out....their centerfire stuff seems OK, but I've had more FTF's and just plain CRUD in the action after trying their rimfire ammo. I never buy their .22's anymore.

Lightnings for plinkin'. Winchester Power Points for hunting. Wolf Match Target or SK for serious target work.

I've never been able to coax Remington anything into working in my match pistols. It fails to feed and/or it fails to fire and/or it fails to extract and/or it's a flyer.

If some guy got a good batch of Remington bulk, he was lucky or blessed. One in a million . That Thunderbolt is such crap that I looked up a salesman at a Shot Show to complain. He told me that it was shipped from Mexico , bulk LOOSE in hopper cars. Honest, that is what the man told me. Win. is very little better in bulk but Federal, even the bulk is pretty goodcheap ammo. Fed Lightning a little better. CCI stingers work fine and the Mini-Max works for me as well as anything. Oddly the Remington Vipers seem to be pretty good hypers. Go figure.---Tom

Winchester Wild Cats are junk. They shoot all over in my Ruger Mk II and my S&W Model 17-4. Also, they are very inaccurate in my Marlin 66 and my CZ-452. However, they shoot ok in my T/C Classic. Go figure. Every hand gun and rifle I own likes different ammo. Must just be the nature of the beasts.

Another vote for Federal 22LR. Works very well for me. Remington 22's are a no go. My experience is they misfire 2 or 3 times per brick.

Of all of the .22 guns i have, the only one that will reliably feed Rem Thunderbolts is my first 10/22 with the stock barrel. The bullets of cartridges are just too big (diameter) for anything else. The stock 10/22 barrel is loose enough to feed them.

I shoot Rem. Golden Bullets out of all my .22's. They are consistantly reliable (auto, revolver or rifle), clean burning and accurate. And - they are under $10 a brick of 525 most anywhere here.

I've tried others - more & less expensive - higher & lower velosity - slightly different bullet weights & configurations. But have found nothing really any better than the Rem. Golden Bullets. Therefore, I see no reason to use anything else.

My 1950s era K-22 would feed a few Remingtons until it got a little bit dirty and then I had to switch to another make. Even at that, it seems to get dirty pretty fast but so did my Kit Gun. Neither was even close to as accurate as an off the shelf $199 Ruger auto.

ATTENTION

This thread wasn't about which .22 rimfire ammo was more reliable or which misfired the most.

It's about how S&W K-22 revolvers are very sensitive to the differing bullet diameters of various brands of ammunition.

Several manufacturers use slightly oversized bullers (.001"-.002") to ensure better accuracy in older firearms. And they often shoot better in newer guns as well. Especially dual cylindered revolvers which may have bore diameters closer to .22 WMR (.224") as opposed to standard .22RF dimensions (.222")

It would seem that some of these brands are a very tight fit in some S&W cylinders. In some cases too tight to even chamber.
