I purchased an "excellent" quality Yugo SKS from SOG. I liked working with them so I'm not bashing SOG.

After taking off the cosmo, I discovered lots of dings and scratches. Most all parts had been scribed with a number, that doesn't bother me. But the bashed front sight, scratches all over the sides of the barrel and receiver do. It looks like someone went all over the thing with a screw driver and pryed things. The charging handle looks like it fell down a few flights of stairs. And it had dents in the stock.

Now, I've been offered $20 my next purchase of another SKS. And I may do it but:

What condition can be expected from the higher grades of SKS's? And where can they be purchased?

I wouldn't call a scratched up gun with dents in the stock excellent. It'll shoot after I clean the rusty bore, but its not like it was carefully taken care of either.

Nesides, how can they tell a "shooter' from an "excellent" unit if its covered in cosmolene? They cant see the scratches in that condition....

This was an $89 one I got from AIM over a year ago when they were doing free shipping on them. I can't remember if it was considered "good" or "shooters grade" but it wasn't excellent. Some bluing was gone and there were dings on the stock but nothing was bashed in or scratched up.

I got an Excellent one from AIM for $149 awhile ago and it really was excellent. Nothing significantly wrong with it to speak of -- maybe a few tiny handling marks on the stock. I thought I had a picture of it too, but can't seem to find it.

Found a pic of the "excellent" $149 Yugo (second to last gun in the line-up):

All the other Yugo's in that pic were less than $100 and not a single one of them had bashed in sites or any problem like that. Bluing was gone or dinged up stocks but nothing else really bad. Don't ask me why I decided I wanted so many of the same rifle. I admit that I went a little insane right after I got my C&R :). They just sit in the back of the safe now all lonely.

Hmmm, me thinks I've been took. I'm having to strip the stock and sand, tung oil it too!

Did you have to do any of that to your top end SKS's?

My 'excellent" looks a whole lot like your $89 shooter....I think they owe me about $50 not $20.

So do you recommend AIM? Have you ever used Southern Ohio Gun?

If I bought locally, I'd pay a lot more though...

And oh yeah, I wanted to ask why do some have arsenal numbers on the stock? Generally, do the lower quality ones only?

I would definitely recommend AIM. I can't think of a time that I was disappointed and I've ordered from them alot. I've never bought anything from SOG but I think I remember sending them my C&R because I've generally heard good things about them.

No, I didn't refinish the stock. I just wiped all the cosmoline off for a couple days. It hasn't been out for awhile so I'm sure it could use another wiping by now. :)

I'm pretty sure all of mine had part of the serial number stamped on the stocks. That's what the little blur is at the bottom of the stock in the first picture is. I just photoshopped it out because I'm overly paranoid about posting serial numbers online.

Thanks for the tips.

I think I'll try AIM next time because I've gotten the SKS bug too!

I'm just to picky when it comes to scratches etc...although I'll probably make some myself, I still want to start off fresh.

Maybe I'll get a picture posted in a couple of weeks.

TheOtherOne,

It's not right that such fine European immigrants should be lonely.

Send some over this way -- I'll make sure they get out on the town! :)

I don't understand the problem. It's a military peasant's rifle from a former communist country. As long as it functions correctly, who cares what it looks like?

I got an excellent from AIM that appeared to have never been handled, much less fired. Absolutely pristine, I can highly recommend AIM.
