So here is the story in the news:

The mofia here in Taiwan contracts a killer through a "contract killer broker". In the past, this is how it worked:

I tell you who I want wacked, I tell you the price, you go find the killer, you confirm the kill, and you keep the difference between what I pay you and what you pay the killer.

So.. first job, he hires the professional of professionals, 308 from the rooftop, kills the other mofia boss, no traces, no witnesses, nothing.

The killer takes the empty casing back to the broker, and gets paid.

Next time, he's thinking, I just need a confirmed kill, no need to spend that much money, keep a little more in my pocket.. so, he hires a guy, drive by with an M16, but the guy was decent, one shot, one kill, traded the casing in for money, and all was well.

So the broker gets too greedy, and he hires the neighborhood thug, who WALKED UP TO THE OTHER MOFIA BOSS WITH AN UZI AT ABOUT 10 FEET AWAY and does a spray and pray..

Well.. 2 magazines, and 30 minutes later, the moron is pinned down by the mofia boss's body guards, the police arrive, and everybody is arrested.

Being the neighborhood thug was nothing more than a hoodlem, he cut a deal by ratting out the broker. The broker was caught and turned in the old 308 and 223 casings as well as ratted out the crime boss, and so the entire thing feel apart because the broker got too greedy.

But the best comment of the entire news report was, the new reporter saying:

"You know the economy must be bad when even the mofia is having difficulty finding good employees"

They had the dumb kid saying "I don't understand how he's still alive, I emptied 2 magazines from near point blank.." obviously this kid has seen too many movies, he thinks an uzi will aim itself and it every target, just like in the movies..

I for one, ain't really losing sleep over it.. mofia and stupidity.. glad the whole crime ring went down, but if history is the great teacher everybody says it is, then there'll be another mofia to take its place in a few months :(

See what outsourcing customer service related jobs to Taiwan will get you?

:p

Moral of the story:

Cutting the training budget so that the executives and middle managers make more money might pay off, but only to a point. Eventually, the whole thing falls apart and nobody is happy except for your competitors.

Secondary moral:

The Yellow Pages is NOT the proper place to find hitmen.

Did they say how much the respective hitmen cost?

The movies seem to say you can get loyal-to-the-death-like-dogs henchmen a dime a dozen, but pros cost a hefty sum and on top of that always end up having pangs of conscience leading to an entertaining shoot'em up.

I know that in parts of Russia and South/Central America, the tendency is towards the cheaper "disposable" assassins who can barely make a living off what they're paid... but Taiwan is a "civilized" country, so I'm wondering what their price is.

I think in Haiti the higher priced assassins are going for 50 bucks a hit. But you can talk them down to about 5.

In an unregulated free market, the problem will eventually correct itself. The brokers who cut too deep to take profits will be eliminated by their own incompetance, the ones that can find a happy balance between quality, price and earnings will thrive. Survival of the fittest, Darwin, etc..

In a regulated market, you would be required to fill quotas of minority hitmen regardless of their skill level, would have to pay FMLA and health insurance for them and their 'partner', and to top it off you would have to pay 15% of their earnings into a regulated pyramid scheme with the idea that the regulators will pay the hitman a sub poverty level pension when they retire. In the end you have a product that is not only overpriced, but of inconsistant quality as well.

And of course it wouldn't hurt if the government allowed unlimited consolidation of previously competing hitmen, thereby giving them a monopoly and the ability to set prices. Then government will provide special 'tax incentives' to those same monopolies (who happen to be huge political contibutors) under the guise of 'depletion allowances' or somesuch;

No, in a properly regulated market, those same companies would be subject to antitrust laws; they would have to compete in the open marketplace; their dealings would be subject to full disclosure; and consumers would have assurance that their products (results) were as advertised.

Sounds like a painfully incompetant broker.

Had open, two way relationships with his hitmen - even the crappy ones.
Kept souvenirs from past hits.
Hired substandard laborers for one-chance jobs.

$2M NT was what the news reported.. ($60K USD for those who don't speak $NT) That's what the mofia pays.. Is that a lot? I don't know the respective prices of the different levels of "service".

I'm not sure what the broker was thinking (was he thinking???)

The thing is (for good or bad) the police basically keeps looking the other way, and just preps the body bags. They feel dead mofia people are ok, and that the smart thing is to not get in the middle of turf wars..

The broker didn't rat out the previous two snipers.. BUT.. the police now have two sets of fingerprints to match previous killings to..the fact that he ratted out the mofia means he's probably not going to live long enough to see next Xmas..

That or a prime example of why competant management is so important.

If you want to be the boss you gotta have the skills. This guy didn't, and his enterprise failed miserably.

That's why the (capable) execs make the big bucks and the unskilled labor doesn't.

So the hitmen will Unionize?:neener:
