I wonder what brought on the change there.

my lgs is sold out but hodgon shows in stock
I just find this interesting

Isn’t this a rotten thing to do ones faithful retailers and distributors?

It depends on the price they are selling it at. If they are staying at full retail and their distributors are staying at a lower price point, they they are just doing what most businesses do. It's actually good for us because it will keep the maximum price distributors sell at, to a certain point.

If they waited for the distributors to build up their business and then start selling to everyone at the same price distributors sell at, then they screwed all their distributors just like Grainger did, when they decided in the 1970s, to send everyone in the world a catalog that wanted one and sell to them at the same price the distributors can buy their products at, leaving all their distributors that built up their business, high and dry.

That's what they are doing. I looked around and I can get the powders I checked for cheaper at a number of places

How come Hodgdon can't ship powder to Massachusetts, but Midway can ??? :cuss:

I would guess Hodgdon, at least for now, doesn't want to get tangled in MA laws which restrict ammo. Oh, and ammo includes:

"cartridges or cartridge cases, primers (igniter), bullets or propellant powder designed for use in any firearm, rifle or shotgun"

There are sever limits as to the quantity of "ammo" you can possess. With out a special storage permit, you're limited to:
  • Not more than 10,000 rounds of rimfire ammunition
  • Not more than 10,000 rounds of centerfire rifle/pistol ammunition
  • Not more than 5,000 rounds of shotgun ammunition
  • Not more than 9999 primers
  • Up to (but less than) 16 pounds of smokeless powder
  • Up to (but less than) 2 pounds of black powder
I'd need the permit. Even then you're limited to to a total of 100,000 rounds.

Do you have a source for these numbers that you can cite? Somewhere that says they are a legal LIMIT, and not merely a RECOMMENDATION? I have seen this posted an awful lot, but been unable to find these numbers anywhere. As far as I am aware, these are merely recommendations, and, even then, some of your numbers are very wrong.

"11-3.7 Smokeless propellants intended for personal use in quantities
not exceeding 20 lb. (9.1 kg) shall be permitted to be stored in original
containers in residences. Quantities exceeding 20 lb. (9.1 kg), but not
exceeding 50 lb. (22.7 kg), shall be permitted to be stored in residences
where kept in a wooden box or cabinet having walls of at least
1 in. (25.4 mm) nominal thickness."

What is posted above is the National Fire Protection Association code, NOT a hardline law. In fact, you will see a great deal of stores in clear violation of it, as it clearly states:
"11-3.8 Not more than 20 lb. (9.1 kg) of smokeless propellants, in containers of a 1 lb. (0.45 kg) maximum capacity shall be displayed in commercial establishments."

Please, if you have a state or federal law that applies to this, I would like you to cite it.

MA is just restrictive enough that shipping/selling into/outof the state is probably encumbered with all sorts of legal snags. Sorry to all MA residents, but just not a good state firearms-wise.

I was going by the MASS RELOADING web site but since they're a third party I quickly checked the MA Law.

Found the Ammunition definition in a different code section: Chapter 266 Sec 101

And it does say: " 'Ammunition', cartridges or cartridge cases, primers (igniter), bullets or propellant powder designed for use in any weapon utilizing a propellant including, but not limited to, ammunition produced by or for the military for national defense and security."

Here's the link to the MA Fire Safety Code. I didn't read the whole thing, but did drop down to Table 1.12.8.50 which shows when a Permit is required. Could be they're only concerned with "loaded" ammunition. Or could be they too could be using the more expansive definition in Chapter 266.

THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE. I'm only pointing out MA is not a friendly state.
