On this & other forums, a lot has been said about hunting wild hogs, javelina, and boars w/ rifles, pistols, muzzleloaders, spears, & even knives (some craaaaazy people out there...:what: )

What I haven't seen is the use of shotguns in wild hog hunting. And that's why I'm posting this here instead of the Hunting forum....

Has anyone here used their shotgun to hunt hogs? If so, what gun/ammo combo did you use?

Thanks in advance.....:D

870 with rifle sights (factory), 20 inch barrel and Winchester slugs. KO's would be better, but the last one I killed, I used Winchesters.

Perhaps the reason most don't write about slugs and hogs is that with decent placement, you get a dead hog and lots of eats. :)

I know a guy that claims buckshot will do really well. I haven't ever personally seen what the effects of buckshot is on a hog though.

Look out! Here it goes again.

Do a search for hogs and 00 or boars and shotguns.

General consensus is shotguns are not a good choice for piggies.

I have used the shotgun with success. Both slugs and 00. But only on smaller feral hogs. I prefer .30cal or greater out of a rifle.

350 RemMag
45/70
300 Savage

These are my preferred pig rounds.

Smoke

A well placed 12 ga. slug will kill any pig on four legs. In a 1-ounce load, you're talking about a 450 grain projectile at 1500 fps making a .70+/- size hole!
