Yesterday I picked up a couple of sporterized mil surps. One was a 98K that had been drilled and tapped. I noticed afterward that one of the holes had been drilled all the way through the front reciever ring. Do I have a problem?..........Essex

Hole doesn't go through the chamber portion. It's the rearward hole on the front reciever ring, Thanks Essex

It shouldn't hurt a thing as long as the scope mount screw isn't too long and get's in the way of the bolt lug when you close it.

The area behind the barrel shank is just a thin web on top where the locking lug recesses are cut out inside the receiver ring.

A lot of gunsmiths just drilled that hole right through. The screw holds better, it is a lot less work, and rcmodel has mentioned the only problem.

The hole is supposed to go through the receiver.

You supposed to take the barrel off so the chamber can't get drilled.

There are ways of defeating that safety feature in jigs.

If you are refering to the hole that I believe you are, I have been told that it is there to vent hot gasses from a blown cartridge away from the shooters face, If you look thru the hole you should see the very front of the bolt at the back of the ejector slot, which acts as a passage for the gasses to keep them from blowing straight back from the reciever ring into your face.
