I recently purchased an AR-15 and spent more on the firearm than I anticipated. I would like to add a holographic sight. I can't afford one of the EOT, or other high-end options. Are any of the AimPoint/NcStar/BSA/etc... options that are under $200 worth it? If so, which one would you recommend?
Thanks-Scott

free bump. i just built one, and it is really difficult trying to sift through all this to find some info about accessories for the ar-15. i have searched many ways but no matter what i get hundreds of threads about usless of topic things.

What ^^he^^ said...the Bushnell will save you about $120.00 over the Eotech. The SWFA website seems to be the best deals on many scopes for the average joe to buy online. There's a (currenly non-working) link to the Bushnell's on the homepage for the Eotechs:

http://www.eotech-inc.com/index2.php

Not certain as far as the construction differences, if any. I was at the range on Monday and there was someone shooting an AR with an Eotech and also switched out an ACOG. He was generous enough to show me the Eotech, the reticle was easily viewable in full daylight. Looked like a very nice optic.

Avoid the open-lense variety, where the fiberoptic projects the reticle onto the lense from behind. They're cheaper (under $100), but they don't work well, at all, in daylight. I got one a while back and now regret it, because it's all but useless during the daytime.

I was going to buy an Eotech, but the price of the Bushnells on SWFA is just too tempting. I just tried placing an order, but they are back-ordered.

So, elsewhere the price difference is about a hundred bucks. Is it worth it to get the Eotech? Has anyone here used both?

My flattop wears an older tasco red dot that co witnesses without a riser . I would like a new optical sight for it , but have other changes that are imho more urgent . I dont know about battery life on the tasco yet , but prob have 100 to 150 hours on this battery and i got it used . This guy http://stores.ebay.com/SuperLight-Pro-2006_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZQ2d33QQftidZ2QQtZkm
has good feedback selling some aimpoint knockoffs , that have had good reviews on other boards , i belive he has some holo sights also . Hope that helps another " poor " shooter out , I know just how ya feel on the price of optics .

Search eBay for an outfit called Airsoftshooting. These guys sell the exact same sight as BSA and Sportsman's guide, for $37.00 delivered. That's $2.00 cheaper than SG's SALE price W/O delivery. I have one on my Hi-Point carbine and plan to order a few more. My buddy has the SG, and it's the exact same thing.

Use your iron sights for now & save up....don't settle, get the EOTech or Aimpoint you know you need to complete the project ;)

I agree with Ten-ring. Get good with irons. Save up and get the one you really want.

I’ve tried Bushnell and Eotech. The only real difference is the aluminum housing and better tolerance to water. The Eotech is supposed to be submersible to a certain degree. I personally prefer the Eotech. I have tested the Eotech shooting in the rain and it worked great. For me, the extra margin of it working when you need it to is worth it. I also suggest getting the AA battery one. If I were you, I would look at getting a used unit. They are a few dollars less and in some cases, you can really get a good deal. Look around at the ar15.com forums under Optics.

And after saying all that… If you really want an inexpensive but durable dot scope, look at the S.P.O.T. MkII. It’s an Aimpoint copy. It’s been tested pretty harshly and it came out smiling. It’s the only one I would trust for the price range. It goes for about $150 new.

i'm having the same problem, but in addition I have a flat top with no ironsights. so do i settle, or just not shoot it until i get the money together. it isn't worth buying ironsights if i am ging to buy an aimpoint or eotech. its like wasting money.

BUIS

I wouldn’t consider getting Back-Up Iron Sights (BUIS) a waste of money. A used BUIS goes from $50-100 most times. It all depends on the flavor of the BUIS. Maybe it’s the crowd that I hang around with but every one of us has a BUIS in addition to a dot scope of some kind. The nice thing about the BUIS and having the dot scope on as well is that you can co-witness them. The idea of a BUIS isn’t new. When the dot scope fails (and every thing electronic I know of does sooner or later), you flip up the BUIS and continue to fight.

I agree, BUIS are a must on a serious AR or even semi-serious AR. Learn how to shoot with irons first and get an optic that will cowitness. Leave the irons on - forget the flip up irons unless you're mounting a quick detachable scope and need the space.

A Holosight is fine and there's a less expensive Aimpoint knockoff out there that's supposed to be pretty well liked assuming you're not going to beat the crap out of your AR. Burris makes the Burris Xtreme line (the XTS-135 and XTS-235) that are less that the EO and Aimpoint. Stay away from the cheap ATN knockoffs and cheap holographic sights - basically most of what's on eBay.

You should be able to find used EO's and Aimpoints that people sell to get the other so it might be worth saving up.

FWIW, I have an ACOG and EO and actually never shoot with either of them. I just like shooting with my fixed BUIS too much. :)

The OKO, the C-More sight and the Russian made Kobra are all good dot sights for on the cheap.

They all go for around $200.

But if you really want something nice, don't settle, buy an EO Tech or an Aimpoint.

EOTech makes the Holosight for Bushnell... They are IDENTICAL except for the extra "armor" over the lens of the EOTech (which makes it more resistant to abuse). I have one of each and I'm hard pressed to find any differences at all save the one I already mentioned. Even the battery cover seal looks (and locks) identical on each.

Unless you're an "operator", or just really clumsy, I don't see any reason at all to spend the extra money on an EOTech over a Bushnell Holosight. I know I won't (again)... Unless I find a really good deal on a used one. ;)
