Holsters: Conceal, convenience dilemma

Milt Sparks has a new holster which appears to be derived from the VM2.

The interesting thing about it (to me) is that the snaps are magnetic.

I would think that would make on/off easier since the thing that gives me the most trouble is balky mechanical snaps.

Using paddle owb, large hybrid iwb, belt loop mounted owb, they all ended up in the holster box unused.

A pocket sized .380 in a Galco pocket holster takes 2 seconds to slip in and nobody notices it. I think it will be my daily carry by default, cause its the only one I have on me everyday.

I will place another vote for Remora.

I have used them for everything from J-Frames to a Government size 1911. They are easy on, easy off, stay in place, are comfortable, and conceal easily.

For the 1911, I use one with the sweat shield and without the reinforced top.

"There's no "best" holster, not even a "best just for you."

Well -- that was true for me until I found the best just for me.

I have tried a number of different holsters. Crossbreed SuperTuck, Wild Bill's paddle, High Noon Snapper, Alabama Kydex pancake, and others.

I like my new CompTac FBI cant paddle. It does everything I need a holster to do. Secure retention, easy on and off, pulls snug to body at 3:30, compact & light weight.

I think I'm through with the holster merry-go-round. "

I posted this in another thread, but it applies to your stated situation as well.

The no-guns allowed signs prohibit firearms not empty holsters.

Seems to me you might be making it a little hard on yourself.
No kidding.

1. Buy a quality holster. Wear it all day.
2. Buy a Fobus or other generic, cheap holster. Keep it in your truck.
3. Wear gun when possible. Put it in truck holster when not possible.
4. Rocket surgery complete. Zero casualties.

I second the Ankle Holster for in the car. Can be accessed quickly without removing your seat belt. DeSantis Apache is #1 in my book.

Also, look at the SmartCarry holster. You get a free trial time with it. Put the purchase on a CC, play with it and return it if it's not for you. You won't be out of pocket if you don't like it. Some balk at the SmartCarry. I find it very useful.

First, the holster and magazine holder should have snaps instead of slots. Some OWB holsters have snaps, such as the Milt Sparks Axiom. You can get away with slots, but such a holster requires quite a bit of futzing to get on in the car.

It comes down to learning how to put on the holster and magazine holder while seated. The first trick is to know where the holster loops will sit in relation the belt loops. Are you splitting two holster loops across one belt loop or behind it? If your holster has split loops, then you need to get the rear loop placed properly before securing it. I find a holster such as the Milt Sparks Versa Max 2 to be easy to put on in the car. A Blade Tech IWB or Milt Sparks Heritage are also easy to put on. I just work the holster into the pants, snap the rear snap and push the holster down until I can snap the front one. I pull out the belt slack and buckle the belt.

Putting on a holster in this way requires less than two minutes to do. What is your life worth? If something happens, you are going to want the biggest gun in the largest caliber with most ammunition on your belt, not a tiny pocket gun that holds only a few rounds.

High Noon Down Under with straps, on a High Noon Rock Steady gun belt. No big trouble to put on and take off, but I also treat the loops as fixed, and don't unsap them to slide it on and off. The holster works extremely well concealing a full size CZ SP-01 Phantom under even a t-shirt in hot AZ summer weather.

The clip version, shown here with the dearly departed Beretta PX4 Storm, wasn't terrible to slip on and off at all.

You might want to check out the Garrett Industries Silent Thunder IWB. Despite using a single clip the clip shape/design makes it rock solid. It's quick and easy to don and doff and very comfortable. I've actually found it preferable to almost every OWB holster I've tried! I CCW almost every day in one and have IWBs for my Nano, USP and P30S.

You must not have had your coffee yet at 3:30AM.

It's funny you mention Silent Thunder from Garret Holsters. I have three of them. They are the best I have found and that is after trying 15 other holsters for 1911's, Sig P226 and P228 and others. However, their standard clip, while very strong and solid connection to the belt, is very hard for me to slide on and off. I FORGOT they offer lots of other clips and loops which are interchangeable on the Silent Thunder. I'm going to give their slim clip a try. I love their holster but had given up on the standard clip design. Maybe this will be my solution. Thanks for jogging my memory!

Just received a new slim clip from Garrett for my Silent Thunder IWB. It does make it easier to put on and take off. It seems plenty sturdy as we'll. this change will encourage me to carry my 1911 all the time, even when getting in and out of the car often.
