I'm currently trying to find a comfortable method to carry my Beretta Px4 Storm. I found a retention holster made by Ross Leather today, and it felt GREAT! It's basically open top and bottom, and the barrel sticks out a couple inches at the bottom (I'm sure there's a technical name for this type of holster, and I don't know what it is). Heck, it's probably only 2.5-3" tall altogether. Now, granted, one must typically spend quite a bit on a quality holster (especially leather), but this one was $34.99!!!

Main question here is: Has anyone heard of or had any experience with Ross Leather, and if so what do you know?

Sub question, BTW: Any other suggestions?

Never dealt with Ross. Sounds like a Yaqui slide holster. I have one made by Galco, but never use it. I just prefer a good IWB over others.

A friend got a great deal on a Ross IWB holster for his 1911. He ended up not liking it. He found it uncomfortable (could be him, but I could see that there were pressure points "designed in"). The attachment method was unstable and the attachment screw would not stay tightened. Take it for what it is worth. The Yaqui Slide holster you are looking at is a different design, but the Ross holster he had was not well thought out.

My son (Springerman 05) carries an XD-9 in a Ross open top leather belt holster and he loves it. Paid like $25 on fleabay for the rig.

Does it look like this?

Trying to find a quality holster without spending the big bucks is tough especially if you don't have any gun shops around that stock different styles. Best thing to do is hit the stores and see what's available and try them on.

BTW, heres the link for Ross..https://www.rossleather.com/index.cfm

Car Knocker: I refer to it as a "retention holster" because that's a what I heard it described as. Let me know if I'm off. As I understand it, a retention holster would be the opposite of one w/ a thumb break or other positive locking mechanism. Retention meaning the gun's held in tight because the holster is molded specifically to the gun.

LennyJoe: The 1911 holster pictured was the one I tried on and liked, but I've since decided that the other picture is the style I'm really looking for (I believe that is known as "pancake-style?").

I tried on some Galco leather for an H&K USP .45 Compact in that style and really fell in love. Also don't have to worry about the muzzle being exposed to, say, the paint of my car:) Turns out, HighNoon Holster makes one like that (in black, even) specifically for the Px4 Storm. No one else I've found so far does. I will be getting one of those ASAP. It's about $70, but if it works like I expect it will, it will be WORTH IT!!!

Boy, I sure am exited about spending all my money. Oh, well.

I'd love some feedback on HighNoon, if anyone has any.

High Noon is the best...but do not be in a hurry to get it if it is not a stocking item...last one that I ordered for a BHP took almost 6 months to get but it was well worth the wait.

Texas9,

To the best of my recollection, retention holsters generally use retention devices in addition to,or in lieu of, molding to retain a handgun. Below are a couple of examples. Googling the term "retention holsters" brings up similar holster links.

Safariland 070 SSIII Mid-Ride III Retention Holster

The Safariland Model 070 is the most technologically advanced duty holster in service today, the 070 SS III features a top snap thumb break, middle finger release tab, patented molded ejection port or cylinder detent and decoy side strap which together provide the highest possibly degree of weapon retention.

CQC SERPA Active Retention Holster-Matte Finish

BlackHawk CQC SERPA Holster Matte Finish. Patented #5,918,784 and other Patents Pending. This unique holster design allows you to forget old-fashioned thumb breaks that slow your draw and complicate re-holstering. The patented SERPA lock engages the trigger guard as you holster the pistol and won't let go until you release it. The release is made using your normal drawing motion, with the trigger finger beside the holster body. As your trigger finger naturally comes to rest on the SERPA lock's release mechanism, simply push the mechanism as you draw the weapon and it releases the gun for a smooth, fast draw. No awkward use of a middle finger release or thumb break to interfere with a full combat grip, the SERPA lock lets you draw the weapon quickly while establishing a full grip from start to finish. Unlike thumb breaks, which can sometimes be difficult to fasten one-handed, the SERPA lock allows you to re-holster quickly and securely every time, using only one hand. The SERPA holster has the same speed cut and concealment enhancing design of our Standard Model Carbon Fiber Holster. All BlackHawk® CQC™ SERPA holsters come with both belt loop and paddle platforms.

Ahhh... I see. Thanks!

I've actually seen that BlackHawk thing, and I really didn't care for it. I don't like Kydex holsters, anyway.

So, what DO you call the type of holster I'm referring to (or is there a name for that at all)?

texas9,

I have a Ross that I carry my Taurus 24/7 in IWB, and for the money it's not too bad. I like the fact that it is lined thus helping to prevent wear on the high spots and corners. I found mine at one of the gunshows there in Austin. I prefer a better quality of holster though for retention. I was in Houston last week on business and picked up a couple of holsters mane right here in texas by Tucker Gunleather. The one I picked up for my Taurus 24/7 gave me some extra value as It also carries my Taurus PT-145, which is actually a smaller framed version of the 24/7. The slides are almost identical. You might want to look into the Tucker line of holsters. Even though they are custom made for you by Tucker, I found a store in Houston, Collectors Firearms that has a whole rack of them. I really prefer the Tuckers and their double clips.

bigmike45 in Texas as well!!

I just ordered a Versa Max II this week from Milt Sparks. Perhaps the best IWB holster on the market. If you are going to wait 6 months, this is the holster to buy. The current turn around time is 24 weeks.
