hey, i've been seriously considering building my own ak, what advice can you give me? where should i get the kit and what receiver should i use? also i would like to see some pics of home built ak rifles. what all needs to be done to a siaga to convert it from the sporter to the original?

Best advice I can give is you should have bought a good parts kit 5-10 years ago when they were still under $100 bucks including a good factory barrel.

Right now today, you can buy one already put together & shooting cheaper then you can buy a beat up Yugo parts kit, a decent receiver & barrel, and the tools you need to build it.

Do you know what parts to buy to convert a siaga to pistol grip? it needs a new trigger right?

This is a great forum, but since you have highly specific questions, I'd recommend an AK specific forum where you can find many of those questions already answered. In addition, you may find other builders in your area who already have the tools adnd knowledge to help you. http://www.theakforum.net/phpBB3/index.php

If you are under 21, you will not be able to purchase a receiver from a dealer. The only commercial receivers I use are the ones from NoDak Spud.

Kits have come back down a bit. Centerfire currently has Romy kits for $100, but as with all current kits lack barrels. You'll spent another hundred or so on an original barrel or a US made one, and will also need several additional made US parts to keep it legal.

Working on a Saiga is a great "bang for your buck".
You will need 5 US made parts. A new FCG counts as 3,
then you can add a stock and pistol grip.
The tools needed to build are not cheap to do it right. For one
rifle it's not worth it. Now 3+ it starts to work out OK.

I would also recommend a great AK-centric site: AK Files.

As far as "building your own AK", nowadays, it's my opinion that the Saiga route is the easiest and best route to your own custom AK.

Not entirely correct. You must have ten or fewer countable imported parts. Stamped receiver AK's have 16 countable parts, milled receivers have one fewer. So you would need six compliance parts on a Saiga.

Nope.

You'll need 10 or less foreign parts. Not everyone is going to convert their Saiga to 100% AK standards so that they'd need six.

See Sam1911's post for the worksheet.
