Ok my question is pretty specific
There seems to be a high instance of car break ins in my neighborhood. We have a 1 car garage & 2 cars so one car (generally mine) is out every night. DW doesn't want a car alarm. I want to use a driveway sensor to alert us if someone aproaches the car but my crack head neighbor's autisic son likes to break things to see how they work.

so any experiance W/ the driveway sensors any ideas how to use one such that the kid can't break it?

Any ideas for a portable alarm

Ps my car sits right next to the house in a car port.

And to make it gun related I could leave my gun in my car and get it stolen some night.

What's your price range. In general, I'd start by adding motion sensors to the driveway for light. It's a lower cost than getting sensors and cameras, which would be next. A dog that barks would also be good.
If you invest in cameras, make sure they record to something like a DVR.
With the cameras and sensors, i'd not worry about the neighbors son. You'd have him on video destroying your property.

I don't know if this would work but have wondered about putting a battery operated baby monitor inside the car. That way if someone is breaking into your car and IF they make enough noise doing so presumably you'd be able to hear them if the baby monitor is not out of range...

Like I said I have no idea if this would be workable not having had any experience with either baby monitors or breaking into cars.:)

In a similar situation I used sensor floodlights.
Someone steps close to the car and bright lights would switch on. Because the sensor was separate from the lights, any lights could be used. I believe they sell Security lights, the type with wire mesh covering them. I didn't have to worry about them being broken so I used regular floodlights. Worked very well for me.

I like motion sensor lights (about $25) and a "mechanical dog" ($25 to 50). You wire the "dog" off of the second light fixture.

The "dog" also has a motion detector that changes the "bark" from a growl to a bark that would scare any sane person, depending on proximity.

Someone comes into the area and the light turns on. If they leave the light goes off. If they continue, the "dog" growls and then barks. Unless you have a lot of barking dogs in your neighborhood, it would be quite effective.

Sorry, I can't find the link for the "dog". I'll keep looking.

I use a VoiceAlert system to monitor the driveway and entry points at my home. You can record a specific message for each sensor, so you know which one was tripped. For example, when someone approaches our front door, I hear "someone's out front," which is recorded in my voice. I've used mine for almost two years, and haven't had any trouble. One minor complaint is that when it's very cold outside, pets can set them off sometimes.

It's about $125 for the base unit and one sensor, and you can add sensors later on for about $50 each. Here's the company's web site:

That looks great! I've never seen these before, I think I'll have to buy one of these. That's for the link!

don't leave anything in the car that you dont want to lose. most of these things are kids taking cds, gps etc, stuff they can sell or pawn. The only thing left in my truck is the jumper cables.

You can go to Amazon.com and get one of those battery powered alarms, see below links. Supposing they did break in, once the alarm was tripped it would wail at about 120 decibles. They have key fobs, so you can set it and unset it every morning. They come pretty cheap.

You set it up on the inside of the car, the motion sensor trips when someone comes into the car. He doesn't know where the sound is coming from, just bolts.

Car alarms get little or no attention. You hear them so much at the mall you tune them out. A silent pager type is good and you will be able to know if someone is messing with your car even if you are inside shopping. You could even leave the car unlocked to prevent perp from knocking out your windows to get the nothing you left in your car. Having a mechanic hook up a hidden cut off switch is pretty simple too.

I found a combo light-voice-camera setup at Sam's Club. 300w light, adjustable for time on, 32ft range on the motion sensor also adjustable, and 20sec. record video to a 1 gig. secure data card, and 3 different voice alarms including barking dog. All this for under $100.
