Homemade media.....WOW

im new to reloading and dont have my tumbler yet i wanted to load some brass but it was dirty....heres what i did.....

1. take a box of brown miniute rice place in the blender on CHOP
2. add a SMALL ammount of corn meal
3. place mixture and brass in a tupper ware container and shake for 20 mins

brass looks brand new!

thought this might help some reloaders without tumblers!

God, that sounds right-on!! Neat idea!! Just make sure you can come by these products economically... (buy in bulk?). But that hand-shaking method will get old after a while. Invest in at least a small tumbler. There are used ones out there......

yea a tumbler is in line i figured the brown rice was semi course so it would take off all the thick dirt and the corm meal was very soft so it would polish the case and yea it works!

throw it in your trunk for a day that might do the trick too. the bouncing around in a car will probably clean it right up

I've tried the "throw it in the back of the car" tumbler. First with brass and corncob in a quart container under the back seat of my truck for a couple of weeks. I couldn't tell that it did anything. Then I filled a coffee can up with brass and media and threw it in the bed of my truck for a week. It didn't roll around as much as I'd expected. I couldn't tell that the brass was any cleaner or shinier.

I don't see manual tumbling as a viable option. I'm gonna make or buy a real tumbler. Thanks for the rice recipe, though, gaudio5.

Or tape the tupper ware shut (well rapped) and throw it into the drier with the clothes and let'er rip...Be sure you check the clothes before your wife does though...

Hey, I'm a taxidermist and I just wonder if I could throw it into my big hide tumbler and let 'er spin in the corn cob grit? I'll have to try it sometime.

I know the music industry has used corn cob media to polish brass keys after they were coined.
I have heard cat litter works also. I would use the clean stuff

IMHO get a tumbler. Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Been there, done that.
