Traded for a bunch of .223 most of which are crimped brass. Not looking forward to reaming the pockets, I let my mind wander to a solution.

Picked up a fan motor controller (rheostat), double gang box, dug an outlet and cover out of my supplies, grabbed a cord I had cut off a vacuum at the dump and built my own pocket reamer. Picture is below. Strapped an old 3/8" drill to a board with plumber's tape, chucked up my hand reamer bit, and away we go.

Turn the speed down low, fit the pocket onto the reamer, press slightly, and voila', reamed brass. Sure beats hurting my old hands any more today.

Are you sure you should be around power tools?

Just kidding you.

You gotta love good old American know how! I love the substitution of plumber's tape for duct tape. Very fancy!

Looks like a nice effective budget solution. As a general warning though a/c motors generally don't like being hooked up to a dimmer. Your drill may suffer some longevity problems if you're concerned about that sort of thing.

At the rate this drill is grinding, I'd have to guess the gear box is gone anyway. Lucky I only have about 800 pcs to ream. By then I'll be so sick of it I'll make d**** sure I never get another piece of crimped brass!

Grandpa, I have a drill rigged up in a similar way. I'm using a floor switch I purchased at Walmart to turn it on and off and I'm using velcro cable ties (also from Walmart), to hold the trigger down. I can slide the velcro up and down the trigger to alter the speed (it's a VSR DeWalt). I use mine with a Possum Hollow Trimmer and an RCBS chamfer/deburr tool. The chamfer tool kills crimps very quickly.

Good idea. very good idea. Only suggestion i would have would be to wear gloves. that will make it easier to handle the brass

I think it would be worth the $8 investment to get a real primer pocket reamer and run it the same way.

your mixing brass, your putting 223 in 9mil,holding bin, hows that going to work? Just pulling your brass,,
thats cool idea i had the same idea,I used my drill with a bit ,and held the drill in my hand, and held brass in my other, and carefully reamed the pockets, but either way,its work, but beats doing it by hand,

Now you see, that is what happens when you younguns get too spoiled and citified. You just don't learn how to think problems through for yourself. Why go and do it the easy way when you can think it through and build it yourself?

I live 150 miles from the nearest supply house and the mule train they deliver with has to add two mules just to get up the mountain. Taint considerate of me to inconvenience them like that.

'Sides it's purely fun to make stuff up by yourself.
