The nice thing about that form? You can edit the letter and make it say whatever you want. So I did. My email to my representatives read like this:

The DC gun laws have done NOTHING to protect the District's citizens. Gun control
is a dismal failure that only prevents law abiding citizens from protecting
themselves.

As a victim of an armed robbery on my doorstep, I can assure you that all the gun
control in the world did nothing to prevent me from almost losing my life. Law
abiding citizens should be allowed to protect themselves.

I'm going to contradict myself on what I said in the MD thread.

I think that, in the near term at least, any hope for real change in DC is a dream. The concept of disarmament is too deeply ingrained into the psyche of the residents and politicians there.

Hopefully this will be a case where the federal control of the city will be of use to our agenda. Those politicians from states where they have not had their rights infringed will not stand for being disarmed while on station in DC.

While I do not remain optimistic on this subject, I also know thhat this is an important part of our overall strategy. We must take the offense, even in the most hopeless of cases or we have basically conceded victory to the other side.

That is a great system the anti-gun nuts have built for us!

While the District is technically under federal control, the gnashing of teeth and wailing from the soft pinkos in D.C. will be so heartbreaking that the congresspeople who believe in freedom will lose their resolve. :banghead:

My philosophy is that when you force the anti's to defend territory they thought they could take for granted, it makes the fight easier elsewhere.

Everybody use that form and start writing those letters!

I wouldn't try to send a pro-gun message through an anti-gun organization's web site. Seems like it would send a mixed message at best. You can contact your representative and senators online directly:

All it does is repeal the 1976 DC handgun ban and allow you to have assembled ready to fire firearms on your own property.

Bans on carrying firearms in DC would stay.

Still it is a good law but the NRA does not want to go too far afraid they might lose key support in the US Senate (a legitimate concern)

Thanks for the clarification. This would at least put it on par with Maryland, which is no great achievement, but given the current state of affairs in DC it would be a huge gain.

I talked to a man at the NRA who dealt with national legislation about this bill and he said DC considers a 'sawed off shotgun' to be under 20 inches.

I asked why doesn't this bill change that to allow 18 and 19 inch barrels?

He said it was because some legislators might be uncomfortable with that change.

Basically it was not an oversight to not legalize, say an 870 Express 18" hunting shotgun, but that it was left out on purpose to gain more support.

No ammo for Brady to scream "They are legalizing 'sawed off shotguns in DC!"

Whether we like it or not, we will win or lose this war based on words. He who can control the lexicon of the debate will ultimately be victorious. In this case the NRA is wise in denying Brady, et al fuel for their bon fire.

Well the change in law would allow AR type pistols and I think even AR-15s, ect.

So they lost bigtime there.

The Bradys will jump on that for sure.

Not that that's bad but it just might sink the bill.

Far as I can tell, it just sends them an email. I had it copy me on what was sent...but there could be something else in a header that you don't see. Not sure...
