i cant imagine soaking my chrome barrel in hoppes and being worried about it. it evaporates after a day and a half. get real guys.

Gunsmith told me the ammonia will draw moisture in. I usually swab out with wd-40 then one dry patch, let the rifle stand on a Newspaper barrel down so the oils don't run back into the stock.

moisture shouldnt hurt chrome....id be more concerned about fouling.......and what better way to rid fouling than to let old #9 solvent sit in the barrel. yeah sure i will dry it out the next day, but chrome is tuff.

Hoppes' is all our family has ever used as far as solvents go. I will admit to using Brakleen, but carb cleaner always scared me (damage the blueing?). I haven't tried any of the other brands of solvents either, Hoppes has always worked well enough for our liking, been using it since it was real "nitro-solvent":).

That being said, I don't see why anyone would trust a solvent to protect from rust. That's what gun oil is for. Even if you go and buy a quart of Castrol Syntec edge for 8-10 dollars, you'll have enough oil for the rest of your life. Why not use a little oil to fight the rust?
