Anyone shoot 62gr Hornady FMJ-BT in 223rem? I found a decent deal on them and wondering how accurate they are. I haven't had much luck with 55gr FMJ-BT being consistent or much luck with 55gr SP so looking for something that might be a little better.

I will follow this. Like you have have had mixed results with the 55gr. I have one gun that hates the stuff, 2"+ pattern. My match barrel will shoot them decent, approx 1 MOA at 100 yrds.

I'm in the process of finding right combinations with these bullets, out of a 16" barrel 1-8 twist. I'm using 8208XBR and CFE223, so far I'm not seeing anything I like. For me I'm seeing just under 2" @ 100yards. My next tests will be up .5gr and .7gr.

Hornady 55gr V-Max.
Is my goto load in my Ruger AR556 is with the 55gr. V-Max using 24.0gr. of 8208xbr, cci primers. 2700fps., 0.78" moa. @ 100 yards.

Just looking for a cheap accurate bullet. I have some other powder I'll try with 55gr fmj. I went to a shop today that has a lot of reloading stuff and no 62gr fmj. Midway has them cheap but I don't want to pay shipping

"...cheap accurate bullet..." You can have one or the other, but rarely both. However, the bullet is only part of the equation. The rifling twist affects the bullet weight more than anything else, but if the trigger pull, etc, etc., isn't good too accuracy goes out the window.

I use 55gr Hornady in a 22" barrel, 1 in 9 twist. You know those Hornady FMJBT ones you can buy for about 0.08 a pop?

I'm using 24 grns of AR Comp powder. Usually shoots about 1 moa. I think if had 1 in 8 twist I would be going with a heavier bullet.

I've seen a faster twist do OK with lighter bullets, notably my 1-7 with Seirra 53 grainers, does OK. If I ever get decent glass on the rifle I'll be able to say JUST how good it does, but with a 5MOA red dot it can give me about 2 MOA, which for me, as a horrible shooter, ain't too bad.
I tried the Hornaday 62 gr slugs, didn't do as well as I had hoped for, but the Hornaday 60 grain SP did quite well, go figure.

I cant remember what load i tried for 55gr fmj-bt but i sent two 5 packs through the first hole on two separate occasions. I forgot to write it down and cant remember what powder/primer i used. I guess it is possible to get a accurate cheap bullet :)

I bought some Hornady 62 bthp from Mid south just to try. I surprised myself with some small groups (for me) . Haven't been able to do much with them for four months...hope to get back to the range soon. I also shoot the 62 fmj Privy (Grafs ) . they're ok too. My AR is a 20", 1:9 twist and I have a 1.5-4.5 scope. Shoots good enough for me to have fun with. Club only has 200 yds so I've never seen much distance with it.

Document, document, document. Ask me how I know. ;)
I used to write it down on the target but then they started accumulating behind the truck seat so I threw them all away. Now I have note cards with dates, loads, etc on them in the boxes and once done with them they are going into a sleeve and into a binder.

I log it all on the computer these days, and save it on four different drives on two different computers every time I make a change in the log. Occasionally I copy it on another computer entirely, and less occasionally on a drive that stays in the gun safe.

The 55gr and 62gr bullets can be made to shoot pretty well, but the bullets are what they are, a 7 or 9 cent bullet that shoots right around an inch with the right load in the right rifle. I shoot the the 55s right at about 1 - 1.5" and I load them 500-1000 at a crack.

As far as losing targets? If you have a smart phone, write the important data on the target, and then take a picture of the target. That way you cant really lose them.

I'm a bit more old school, I will load 50-100 to try, put them in a zip lock bag with data on a slip. I save those slips, in the empty bag. Havent had a lot of luck with those 62 grainers....yet.

A good, inexpensive accurate bullet?
These:
MidSouth Varmint Nightmare 55gr jhp
MidwayUSA DogTown 55gr jhp
About the same price as the FMJ's, but twice as accurate.
Yes they have thinner jackets, and are designed to expand. Ditto match grade bullets.
They are what they are.

I tried Nightmare varmint, but were not HP if I remember, they were slightly worse than Hornady 55 gr FMJ in my gun, I will have to try the HP.
