US house judiciary chairman Bob Goodlatte does not forsee the issue of universal background checks being considered by the house.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee said Wednesday he opposes universal background checks on gun sales and doesn't foresee such a measure being part of gun legislation in the House.

But Rep. Bob Goodlatte of Virginia said at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast with media that such a requirement could unnecessarily inconvenience law-abiding citizens and lead to the creation of a national gun registry — something Goodlatte and many other Republicans oppose.

Instead, Goodlatte said he supports strengthening the existing background check system for gun buyers and cracking down on illegal firearms sales.

You have to remember that the survey that is used for the "40% of gun acquisitions are without background checks" is not gun sales.

60% of gun acquisitions were gun sales at stores*.
13% of gun acquisitions were gun sales not at stores.**
19% of gun acquisitions were gifts from friends or relatives.
3% of gun acquisitions were private trades, sometimes strangers but often friends or relatives.
5% of gun acquisitions were inheritances, usually relatives.

The gift guns I have received, the guns I have inherited, and my swaps and trades involved at least one person (me) who has already passed NICS BG checks multiple times since 1999 and usually the other person is known to me to be clean.

People are wising up to the fact that it is simply not true as some claim that "40% of gun acquisitions are at gun shows without background checks by unlicensed dealers".

Like the "90% of traceable Mexican drug guns come from US" stat, the "40%" is not what it is promoted to be.

* store sales include business locations that would have to have an FFL, gun shop, pawn shop, store with sporting goods dept.
** not store sales include fleamarkets, private buy/sell transactions, and gun shows which include both dealer and private transcations.
