With .22 lr barrels available and dedicated 22 lr uppers gaining popularity, I was wondering how accurate they are. I have a S&W 15-22 and its fun, but ultimately not that accurate. I guess I have outgrown the S&W, it's reliable, it's cheap, I just wish it was more accurate.

I'm sure you didn't buy the M&P 15-22 to shoot 100 to 300 yards like one would typically shoot a 16" AR-15.

That being said, I bought mine to keep the same manual of arms for inexpensive practice.....and for me, that means out to 50 yards. If I need to go further out, I'll load up its bigger brother and continue the practice at distance.

Just curious....would you expect to be shooting .22LR further with a dedicated AR upper?

Oh man, that's a loaded question. How accurate do you need it to be? A lot, or most of it is a matter of the ammo. Most .22 ammo is just cheap plinking fodder. I wouldn't call any .22 inaccurate until I've run all of the available types of .22 ammo through it. My smith will bust clays at 100 yards with pretty good consistency with mini mag hollow points.

They can be quite accurate . I have a Tacsol LT upper that with the its favorite fodder , Fed 714/711b or CCI Standard Velocity , will put 10 cadenced rapid fired shots into ~ .7 at 50 . Not to shabby for a 22 autoloader . Have read glowing reviews about the new CMMGs , nothing but good things so far . As Tonyangle stated , its all about the ammo selection , try a box of everything you can get your hands on , it will like something . Try some sub sonic stuff if it will cycle the action , that whole in and out of the speed of sound thing can really open groups up .

they are plenty accurate for scale training, plinking, and casual shooting.

popping clays @ 100yds as tony mentioned is plenty accurate for just about any rimfire.

i dont think they are rimfire match rifle accurate. probably not quite as accurate as a 22 target rifle like a cz bolt action, or a shilen or lilja barreled 1022, but i could be wrong.

I just got a CMMG dedicated 22LR upper 2 months ago. It will regularly shoot jagged hole groups at 25 meters. I've mostly been shooting simulated range targets at 25m, but of the few times I've shot at 50 yards the best it has done was 5 shots inside a quarter (as in 25 cents, not a 1/4 inch)

The best I've gotten at 100 yards was right about 3 inches. I'm also a mediocre shot though and I'm sure the rifle is capable of better.

I just ordered their bolt hold open adapter they sell for $20 last night, so in about a week I'll see how well that works.

The mags are going for $20 currently and are not proprietary, which is always a good thing. They're selling a 20 inch barrel A2 style 22LR upper currently, as well as the standard 16 inch barrels. They use regular 5.56 AR15 receivers with a 22LR barrel and bolt, so the weight and feel is just about right. Oh, because of the way the 22LR barrel attaches to the receiver, it only sticks out around 14 - 15 inches and looks like an M4. They also put a fake forward assist on the thing to complete the M4ergy look.

They also sell the dedicated upper with barrel collar and minus the bolt itself for those who already own their 22LR conversion bolt.
