How difficult would it be to replace sights on my Gold Cup?

I have found a set of the exact same champion sights with tritium inserts that I would like to put on my colt gold cup trophy instead of the original plain sight. Is this possible for me to do, a local gunsmith, or do I need to send my slide somewhere for this?

Replacing the rear sight is child's play. Unscrew the screw, drive out the pin with a small pin punch, and put the replacement sight back on.

The front sight is far more complicated.

It is staked on and requires a staking tool to re-set the new sight. Since you are going to a night sight, the chance of you breaking the Tritium vial is high if you just start beating on it with a staking punch & hammer.

I would look for someone with the proper night sight staking tool and experiance to do it.

what does that mean? I know they switched from gold cup national match to trophy at some point, did the sights change then? Does this make it more or less difficult?

They didn't switch - the blued GC still uses the Eliason type rear and staked front while the stainless Trophy version uses a dovetailed Bomar type rear and a dovetailed front.

I don't know if Colt used anyone else's standard dovetail sizes for their sights on the Trophy, but if they did not then yes, it could be more difficult to make a change since a Novak (for one example) sized dovetails might be smaller than those on a Colt making it a thing in which metal would have to be added to be able to make the new smaller cuts.

All this you'd need to find out before buying a sight that SEEMS to be usable on your pistol.

Yeah, I didn't know they added the word "Trophy' to the blued gun, thought it was how you told the difference. I have the stainless and a bunch of old blued ones that don't have 'trophy' on the rollmark.
