how do you determine seating depth

I think i do pretty much the same thing as WitchHunter...slightly seat a bullet and gently chamber the round a few times until the chambering of the round has finished seating the bullet. I then set the round in the press, adjust my die down to the bullet and lock it in place. Thats what i did for my bolts anyway, if its an AR your talking about, the same method can be used but you must also take into account that the round needs to go into the magazine too. If it doesnt, then obviously you need to seat a tad further until it will.

When y'all talk about .020 under, is that .02 under COAL or .02 from the lands? Or is that the same thing?

I was referring to off the lands, as that is always my reference point.

I'm fairly certain off the lands is what most people are referring to. For center fire rifles anyway.
