When one of my salesmen bought a boat and the first dern payment came calling a month before he was expecting it, he brought in a .357 K-frame that he only asked $100 for. You don't even need to be in the market for one of those to know that is not to be passed by... and it wasn't. It's in my wife's closet wall safe right now. :D

Yeah, but you remember when they were $199 when you buy five, right? Now those were the days. I was inches away from putting together the group of guys needed to get a bag of them... but didn't, for no good reason. Dang me.
Unless your friend bought a row boat I do not know what boat payment would be just $100 maybe to add to payment. Sometimes you have to find out what the person is smoking when they brag about a smoking deal lol

Know the current values..

.......of your "want" list. I've picked up more than a few deals knowing the values and hearing lesser prices from various sources ( friends, LOCAL internet forums, local shops, etc. ). One of my best buys was a Ruger Single Six. Made in '57, glossy bluing ( little worn, about 90% ), steel ejector housing. Firearm was priced at $149. Already a deal. That day only, 20% off. Down to $119. And this is a flat-top Single. Counter guy told me I was stealing this gun. He was an older guy who just worked there, owner set the prices and didn't know much about collectibles. I told him I knew I was and that's why it was walking out the door with me even though my wife and I were just there to buy boots (local Army-Navy )!

And to add insult to injury, the boots were buy one pair,50% off the next.

My wife asked me if that was a good deal on that gun when I was looking at it. I told her it was a steal and a half at $149 ( didn't know the 20% thing yet! ). She told me you better grab it now! I'm glad she loves revolvers and shooting!

Well, there's my advice and BEST story. Got others but they won't top that.

Recognize that for the vast majority of us, guns are luxuries, toys for grown ups. There are very few situations in which any of us NEEDS a gun within any short of short time frame. That will get you into the right mindset of setting your own price and waiting for the deals to come.

I wanted an M1A for about 8 years before running across a good deal on some police trade-in scout models. The wait just made it all the better when I finally got one.

A friend of mine and his wife go to a lot of garage sales. She looks at the clothes, glassware and appliances. HE walks around a few minutes and quietly asks the sale owner if they have any sporting goods or collectibles for sale. He's stumbled onto stashes of baseball cards, coins, guns, reloading stuff, old tools, cash registers, beanie babies (passed on them) and other interesting stuff at steal prices. Best deals are older women who say yes, they have an old (fill in the name) gun in the back closet that they really don't want around any more, it belonged to their late husband, they are afraid of it, and would he be interested? :D

It's quite simple really...Patience....I know what I am looking for and what I'd be willing to pay. No compromises. When the right deal pops up I jump on it. I avoid the "I need it now" mentality that our society in now plagued with....

For every smoking deal I've had, I've had 3 times as many that are average deals. Then a couple where I over paid, because the gun was there in my hands and not something that was in inventory often.

I just don't have the time to cruise through gun stores, gun shows, or pawn shops to find those hidden deals. Maybe when I'm retired and the kids are out of the house, I'll be willing to spend the time and gas money to increase my odds.

None of my smoking deals have ever come from a retail store....I rarely even set foot in a pawn shop or sporting goods store for that matter. Friends needing money, friends of friends looking to get rid of something that they couldn't afford in the first place or Facebook groups that I belong to are the prime sources for deals. If you wait to find a deal in a retail store you will be waiting a long time because there are old guys with nothing better to do than hound the employees every day looking for a bargain.
