I want to paint the writing on my saiga and other guns. What paint and technique do you guys use? Can I use nail polish?

If you mean just fill in the engraving its easy
get some model paint paint the area you want done then wipe away the excess with nailpolish remover

Nail polish works some even use white crayon youtube for a visual aide and everyone has their own tip

Use Testors Enamel model paint. DON’T use lacquer paints, grease pencils or nail polish, they won’t stay in place.

Get the color(s) you want and a bottle of thinner. Thin slightly, apply with the tip of a paper clip, let dry for a few minutes and then lightly rub the excess off with a Q-Tip dampened with the thinner. If you mess it up…just start over.

Here is what it looks like (3 yrs later). Still holding up and looking good.

Well theres no where around me at all that carries model paint. Im going to use nail polish cause its cheap, and already had everything in house. Watched a video on it and the guy said its plenty tough. If it doesnt hold I can always remove it.

Yea I understand, but the little that Ill actually use it should hold up. Like I said, if it doesnt hold up Im not out anything and it should remove easily.

I use Rub 'n Buff to color fill engraving all the time.

Much easier than paint. Just rub the color in with a finger, let it dry for a minute, and then buff off the excess with a paper towel. If some gets too dry to buff off, lighter fluid will clean it up.

I spent a day struggling with this recently. I watched every video on You-Tube, and I still couldn't get it to work. I finally found a thread on arfcom, and combined that info with a crafting blog I found...
1)Use a Q-tip or small brush to cover the engraved area with paint ( I used Testor's due to availability and selection of colors, gloss & flat, although I suspect nail polish would work fine)
2)take a piece of cardboard or heavy cardstock or plastic and scrape off the excess
3)Let it dry for 5-10 minutes and wipe off what little is left on the surface. Here is the trick I found on the crafting blog.....use a page of telephone book paper folded over to make a stiff, flat pad. Dampen it with mineral spirits and rub over the area. The flat, hard surface will not lift the paint out of the engraving, but will take it off the flat surface.

Using this method, I got GREAT results even on shallow engraving, and it only took one coat to fill the engraving. Every time I tried using paper towels or rags, the soft material would scoop the paint out of the engraving, but the paper was too stiff and flat to do that. Worked great for me.

Wow, the stock paint on these saiga's is terrible. Lightly rubbed it with alcohol and the black paint rubbed right off. Now Im contemplating painting the whole gun!

Yeah, the factory "paint" on Saigas is lousy. I wound up doin' the rattle can on mine. I was thinking about parkerizing it, but didn't want to have to sandblast it.

The rollmarks aren't very deep either (at least on mine). I used a sharp-pointed engraving thingamajig on my Dremel and made them a little deeper, which made the paint easier to do & nicer looking. The Saiga receivers are HARD, though, and I wore out my bit pretty fast. Cutting the hole for the pistol grip bolt was a PITA, too.
