Myth busters did that with a .30-06 but their purpose was to test what kind of impact it had when it came down. I suppose it would be pretty hard to measure how high the bullet would go, but some aspiring physicist out there could calculate it. By the way, it doesn't matter how high it goes or how big the bullet is, they all hit the ground with the same fairly low velocity.
