How many rounds in 11 pounds?

This one might be fun little problem for you math-heads.

Joe Gunner is taking a trip on an airplane and has decided to take his firearm. Speedy Airlines says he can pack his ammunition but it only permits a passenger to travel with up to 11 pounds of ammo. Assuming that Joe Gunner packs 158FMJ .38spl practice ammo, how many rounds can he expect to bring?

My scale shows a loaded .38 special with 158 grain SW at 229.6 grains.

1 pound = 7000 grains

7000/229.6=30.49 (rounded) bullets per pound (b/lbs?)

30.49 x 11 pounds=335.39

You have to round down. Of course idividual cases and powder charges can be different. This is probably a high end since I only throw about 5gr of powder for my wife to practice with.

According to midway 2000 new winchester .38 cases is about 20.5lbs. Whats a primer weigh? Maybe 10grs (blind guess btw). Add 71.75 for the case, 8-10 for the powder, 158 for the bullet, and it's roughly 250grs for 1 round. So, a little over 300 rounds give or take of course.

round is approx. 230 gr. total.

7,00 grains = 1 1b
so 77,000 grains = 11 lbs
divide by 230 = about 335 rounds

Ah, but what about the weight of the packaging? IIRC, the current FAR requires that ammo shipped in your checked baggage be in the original packaging.

Not true. You can carry it in "fiber (such as cardboard), wood or metal boxes or other packaging that is specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition."

A factory box is not going to ad that much weight to the equation. Besides, the approximate round count received from the responses here are enough to gauge the limits of rounds packed for air travel.
