I just bought a spring loaded thrower and want to go to my father-in-law's place in PA to shoot some clay pigeons. Only problem is, there is a house just under a mile away in the direction I would be shooting. I'm pretty sure that with buckshot, I'll be fine, but does anyone actually know how far 7 or 8 shot loads will reach and what is a safe recommended distance behind the target?

Um, yeah, I read that. It's only like 2 threads down. I'm more concerned about an errant load ending up in their window. I know I can hit out to 60 yrds, but where do the pellets drop completely?

I don't want to hit their house/dog/car/children, etc.

1) Please do not use buckshot to shot clay targets.

2) 1 Mile is plenty for target loads.

3) The maximum range in yards equals 2200 times the shot diameter in inches.

4) Other factors come into play such as wind, altitude, humidity and temperture. But their effect is minimal to the average shooter making Journee's calculation close enough.

5) figure 200 yards for 7.5 shot plus another 200 yds buffer. so around 400 yards.

Our trap club president sat out on the live range under a sheet of plywood and moved out to see how far the shot carried. He could hear the pitter-patter of no 7 1/2 for about 700 feet, somewhat more than the formula predicts.

The range safety guidelines from the NRA says 300 yards for up to size 7.5 shot.
