How old is my Smith and Wesson 38 special

I purchased an older Smith and Wesson 38 special ctg last year. On the top of it is marked Smith and Wesson Springfield Mass. USA

on the butt of the gun it has the number 314973, also had the same number on the cylinder. I would appreciate any information I could get on this gun. has a 51/2 or 6 inch barrel, blued, double action and original wood handles with s&w gold emblems in the top of the handle

To add to the previously supplied information:

The serial number indicates your revolver was made around or during 1919.

Barrel length is measured from the front face of the cylinder to the end of the muzzle, and should be either 5 or 6 inches.

Heat treated cylinders were introduced at or about serial No. 316,648 so if you shoot it use standard rather then Plus-P ammunition. Use of the latter will not blow up the gun, but could cause serious other damage.

Your revolver does not have a positive hammer block (introduced in 1945) so if you carry it, rest the hammer down on an empty chamber.

Value depends on what condition it's in, and because I cannot examine the piece I'll decline offering an estimated value. In general, those that are in good to excellent/mint condition sell in the $200 to $500 range. In less then good condition value drops quickly.
