Hello All,
I have another question on HS6 just got back from shooting
I had some loaded up 40 S&W 155gr plated at the min start
load data form Hodgdon online, shooting a G22 they
shot and function great but lots of powder flakes left ,
since I have no interests in load it up to the higher range
as I am only punching paper should I switch to a magnum
primer to help clean up this load, this is the only powder
I can find locally for now.
Thanks

Yep BigBore is right. Get closer to max and you will have more complete burn. A heavier bullet will help also.

Yep I can't put it any plainer than the above two post. Just the nature of this beast, it likes a little more pressure to clean up.

I use it a LOT in my 45 Colt loads but with bullets weighing upwards of 270'ish grains. There is no doubt when the hammer falls, but they burn nice and clean.

You don't have to go all the way to the top before it gets cleaner. Plus it's a 'soft shooting' powder, so it won't punish you much as you go up. Try the magnum primer and bump the load up a bit.

Maybe Universal will return soon, that's the ideal powder IMO for moderate loads in .40.

hello jojo,

first, that's a mighty small bullet you're shootin there. not the best combo, but it can work.

second, what primer are you using? you may not have to go "magnum" as another regular primer could do better. try switching and see

third, try one thing at a time (bump charge, mag primer) so you can figure out which change did the improving.

i use a mag primer with all my hs-6 loads (even in 45acp using six grains of powder and a heavy bullet).

luck,

murf

HS-6/W540 is a shotgun powder and being a shotgun powders sometimes they can be dirty at lower pressures. It's also a slower ball powder so the use of a magnum primer IMO is necessary. Even at lower pressures a magnum primer will help but I also suggest you come off the min charge a little.

Well I will give the mag primers a try I really should get a simple chorny to know where
Im at

So in a related note I have been loading Xtreme 165gr plated. I understand the heavier bullet is better for the slower powders, is 180gr heavy enough and more normal for .40SW or are some of you guys loading even heavier bullet, 200gr or more?

I have a Glock 23.

The 180g work great in the 40. I seem to get better accuracy than the 165
