Hello all, I went around some pawn shops this weekend hunting deals on some surplus rifles.

I found kind of an oddity yesterday... in the local shop they have a sporterized mosin nagant (marked 250$). I typically don't even look at the sporterized rifles but for some reason I just wanted to check it out in case it belonged to Stalin or something.

I found out though the rifle is actually a Hungarian m91/30. Marked 02 on the receiver and 1952. I have never seen a full sized one before (mostly the m44 size rifles).

Does anyone think this is rare enough to try to get back into its original configuration? As best I can tell it's just the stock set that I would need. Barrel bands and stock metal is present but handguard is gone and stock is cut way back.

Well, uncommon Mosins (heck, ALL Mosins), are skyrocketing in value these days, so might be worthwhile to restore it. Im just too concerned about future availability of 54R to get back into the Mosin scene.
I was kind of thinking the same thing. I do currently have a t53 carbine and '28 hex tula that I worry about being able to feed in the future. It would be pure investment I suppose. It's come between that gun and a really nice 1904 dated m91 carcano carbine. I fear in the future none of these cartridges will be easy to come by unfortunately.

They were better quality Mosins. I don't know whether you would find the correct furniture for it, however. You might try contacting SARCO.

Here's a couple places offering Mosin military stocks:

I did a re-militarization of a P-14 a few years ago, using a brand new replacement stock from Numrich Gun Parts. I also had to buy some stock furniture, but in retrospect I'm quite happy that I did:

"Future availability" seems to indicate that it is still around right now. ? Is it? I wouldn't know, I stocked up many-many years ago. If so, stock up on it now. !!!

7.62X54 cases are available from PPU, and bullets in .310-312" are to be found. Usually, almost always, they will shoot .308" bullets just fine. Heck, you can buy a cheap LEE mould in a variety of shapes and sizes. Scrap lead is available.

Primer availability is "spotty", but you can still find them if you look hard. (stock up when you do) Most everyone seems to be carrying powder. If one stocked up on cases, primers, powder and bullets right now one could feed the Mosin-Nagant "forever". Or certainly cheaper and longer than buying loaded ammo, which may not be available.

No offense, but kind of a "weak" excuse to stay out of the Mosin scene because ammo may not be around in the future. !!! :)

Even Winchester has 7.62x54r, though I was highly dissapointed with it.

Hard to beat a Mosin, just be sure to keep it clean and you wont have a bout of 'stickyness'.

The Hungarian ones are much like the Polish made ones, they served well, but never fought, so you'll find them in great condition.

North VietNam fielded a few Hungarian PU scoped M48's.

Most ones available arrived after the Iron Curtain went down and we had favored trading status with Hungary .

I was playing around with loading my M44 down to 7.62X39 level today, and she put four shots into 3/4" at 50 yards. ! The flyer low and left is the first shot I think, from an oily barrel. All five "felt good", I didn't pull any. But I didn't run a dry-patch down the bore before I shot. I keep my Mosins clean and oily, so they don't get sticky. :) Yes she shoots that load low, but I think it will be on with the sights set at 300. We'll see. She's on at 100 with full power ball ammo.

The Moisin-Nagant will never be any harder to feed than a 303 British. At least the round is still in military service (probably too much so right now, hence the lack of imports). It also doesn’t eat brass as badly as the Enfield’s rear locking bolt.
It may never be cheaper than a 308, but it’s far from disappearing.

I put it on layaway to keep the wife at bay hahaha I'll post some photos when I pick it up around Christmas time. Was able to get it for 250$ no tax. All parts match and are marked with the 02 marking. I'm down to my last spam can of 54r so might be time to get some more mosin food.
