I've been reading about the NY State DEC's venison doination program, and I think it's a great idea. A quick search found that many states have similar "hunters for the hungry" programs. It strikes me as a great way to help hungry people and good p.r. for hunting. Not to mention some of these folks might try game meat for the first time! :)

My questions are: How many hunters here participate in such a campaign? What are your experiences with it?

Thanks!

Ted Nugent got it going back in '89, in Michigan. His site says there has been more than a million pounds of meat donated since. I don't think there is such an organization up here.

Couple here Illinois. Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry and Sportsmen Against Hunger. Not sure which one I give to. All I know is that my processor charges me $20 to turn it all into ground venison and I get a nice, warm feeling.

There's a program like that here in WI. All you have to do is drop your carcass of at any of the participating processors (theres one in just about every county). They take it from there, and for free! Its nice because you get to do something good and it gives you more time to hunt. Especially here in South WI where the deer herd is getting a little rediculous.

I like the idea- but I am already donating my time to harvest the deer, my $for a license, my land access fees, time to clean the deer, and costs to transport it. The places around here that I have found want to charge me an additional fee on top of the above to "donate" my deer. I'd give it to them free of charge, but not if I have to pay to donate it. I'll eat it myself and just not use my additional tags.
