$129 for a compact 9mm. It was tempting. Why? Because I was at the range the other day and the guys next to me were shooting Hi-Points. No jams and impressively accurate.

I've thought about buying one just to shoot it until it stops to see exactly how bad the things really are.
Then I figure why bother.
People that buy them, will buy them regardless, and those that won't buy them won't buy them for any reason.
I took the buck one-twenty- nine I'd have spent and stuffed it into video slot machines instead. Took me the better part of half a day to lose it. Something tells me it lasted longer that way than it would have if I'd have put it into a High Point
Then I figure why bother.

From what I can tell, you'd at least have an "anchor" at the end of the day for your BASS BOAT, had you bought the Hi-Point. Unless you hit the jackpot at the slots, all you've got is a frustrating memory from that money.
They're not bad guns.
Not elegant. Not attractive. But functional. And they shoot as well as some guns costing 2-3 time mores.
If you can get past the basic "blow-back" design in a 9mm, they'd be a good gun to have in the truck or in a tackle-box.

Id consider them for a toolbox gun or boat gun, or if you wanted a loaner for someone. I too considered picking one up to try it out, but then decided that I could put that money towards something else.

If you want to 1) shoot 9mm (including +P, once in a while), and 2) want to have a great, no-questions-asked factory warranty, the Hi-Point may be a better deal. Their customer service is apparently VERY good.
There's no question that the Mak is a great gun, and better for concealed carry. There are also those who feel that the 9x18 round is arguably a marginal self-defense round. I'm among them.
(I don't have and probably won't buy a Hi-Point -- unless its the Carbine -- but understand why some would. A fellow I know who runs a very good [and, I think, profitable] gun shop says the Hi-Point is the only "cheap" handgun he'll carry -- 'cause they never come back.)

The Star BM is a nice-enough gun, but a possibly a bit on the fragile side... and with no warranty service.
(Fragile in that the firing pin can break easily, and some parts may be hard to get -- like extractors.)

The CZ-52 isn't just anyone's gun. The firing pins are fragile -- unless you get a better one from Makarov.com. And the round is pretty hot, and you risk a LOT of over-penetration if used from home defense. And as with the Star, not everyone would know where to get one.
And if anything breaks, not just everyone is going to know where to get it fixed.
There's a place for the hi-points, but its probably NOT in my gun collection.
(Hell -- inexpensive S&W revolvers are a good option, too!)

My Wife and Son took a safety and marksmenship class a couple of weeks ago, and one person showed up with one. He couldn't get to feed or anything. One would hope that at it would at least function. As I have no other knowledge I can't say one way or the other about owning one.

I actually saw a couple of Yugos driving down the road, under their own power, one time ... I still didn't ever seriously consider buying one.

I am a instructor for the NV CCW class. For some reason the Hi Point is a very popular pistol here. I just had 2 guys take the class today and they both purchased new Hi Points for the class ( I dont tell them what to or not to buy). I have only seen 1 failure out of close to 100 Hi Points through my class, and that was today. While loading the mag, somehow it came apart, we never found the follower. It happened while trying to put the 10th round in the 10 round mag. Other than that the pistol performed great.
I can say I would not buy one for CCW but I can also say that I have never seen one fail, for someone on a very tight budget I dont think you can go wrong with one. It sure beats nothing.

I have seen much higher priced better made pistols fail much much more. I know they are ugly and cheap but they are far better than nothing.

you can get something better even if you want something that you dont mind loosing.

Yah a Star would be a better choice,until the Johnson rod breaks and it sits in the safe for 3 years while you look for one in vain! Its clearly superior!

People who recommend Makarovs,CZ-52's and such instead of a Hi-Point are turning a blind eye to the market which is Hi-Point.People who buy Hi-Points (ME!) want .45acp and 9mm luger in a warranted gun.
They sure is UUUUUgly! However, if that's all you can afford, why not. There was a guy on TFL and maybe here under a new name called Tony Ulichne. He swore by his and he owned several as I recall. To each his own. I wouldn't get one becuase I enjoy the aesthetics of a gun and the Highpoint just doesn't cut the mustard for me.

Hi-Point firearms are for the indigent, curious, collectors, and, amazingly, home defense and CCW. They have a warranty. CZ52s and Maks do not have a warranty. Hi-Point warranty service is reputably very good. Indeed, CZ52s and Maks are probably better made guns. But that should not deter shooters from buying Hi-Point guns, which happen to be made in America. In fact, according to the MKSsupply.com website, all parts used to make the guns are made in the U.S.

My first day at the range proved that this was the best Bet I ever placed. The weapon performs equally if not better than many handguns costing much much much more. thank you thank you.

just had to let you know that my dealer tried so hard to talk me out of buying a HI-POINT comp. he really wanted to sell me a firearm that cost about $500.00. but after reading a article written in american handgunner magazine, I decided to purchase a hi-point for under $200.00 I love it and it shoots great. thanks

The local sellers love hi-point firearms! Even when other guns sat next to the hi-point on the shelf they recommended the hi-point. "we;ve sold hundreds and never have any returns!" I have bought two hi points and both times stood in line behind other buyers of hi-point guns. SAFE< FUN and WELL MADE!

I purchased a Hi-Point 995 carbine i December based on the evaluation in GUN TEST MAGAZINE in their February 2002 issue. It is a great little carbine and fun to shoot. I developed some reloads for the gun and had a round with no powder in it. the bullett lodged in the barrel. I tried to use a wood dowel to push the lodged bullet out. the end of the wood dowel broke off and was stuck in thebarell. I called the factory. I was told to send in the gun for service. it was covered under the LIFETIME WARRANTY. I thought to myself, sure they will cover it!!! I sent the rifle in june 23 2003 and on May 6,2003 I got the gun back. Not only did they replace the barrel for FREE, they replaced the firing pin, firing pin spring, and the main recoil spring. ALso included in the box were two extra magazines with a note that stated" here are two extra magazines for your trouble. What a great Company!!!!!

I think they're great, solely because it allows people who couldn't arm themselves otherwise to do so.
I'm different than most of my family. I think the more guns in private hands, the better!
If an inner city mom wants a warranted gun, and can only afford a hi-point, then it's ok. That's one more person who refuses to be a victim.
