I regret not getting into pistol competition as late as I did. I find that shooting competition you are in another league. Its more intense, my concentration is is much more focused and I know that it will take a while for me to get into the rhythm of things. I know that I have potential to shoot a ragged hole into a target at 50 feet 22 rimfire competition after applying some hard work.
I am looking to increase my score shooting centerfire pistol and am asking for a recommendation for a centerfire target/match pistol from those who have the experience. I have seen a couple that I would like to buy but I don't know anything about them. The Colt Gold Cup comes to mind but however I might be thinking that this is a brand name and I can do better.
1. What caliber do you use in a centerfire pistol match?
2. If Semi-auto.
3. Make and model.
I prefer not to use anything other than iron sights however I will consider a pistol with a rail to make that necessary upgrade in the future.

Thank you in advance

For many years I shot a Sig P229 which was very accurate out of the box with no gunsmithing.

Bullseye is a different deal from the action pistol sports (steel challenge, IDPA, etc.) Might get better advice if you were more clear on the discipline.

Colt Gold Cup
From your other post, looks like you have "my series 80 45 ACP. "

Use it for the center fire stage of Bullseye pistol, if this is the competition you speak of.

I used a s&w m 28 38 spec. Ammo, in center fire for fun. But then switched to a early 70s series Gold Cup 45. Lets you get a great zero for the 45 match. Plus the bigger hole on target may cut the higher scoring ring. http://www.bullseyeforum.net/

What are you shooting? If its bullseye, then a Springfield Range Officer in 45ACP might be a solid choice for beginning. I have shot bullseye for many years and have several different wad guns, all will hold the X-ring at 50yds. I bought a Range Officer because I liked the bbl fit and Bomar style sights. With Federal GMM 185gr semi-waddcutters in held 1" groups at 25yds. I think they also make the thing in 9mm.

I am still looking into a good center fire pistol. Did check out a Springfield Armory Range Officer. Volquartsen trigger on a Ruger MK II did spoil me a bit. When I get a good centerfire match pistol its going to have to get a trigger job.

I am not a match shooter BUT many of those who are use a nice CZ custom shop shadow series gun.priced right, great trigger, VERY accurate and reliable
these are my favorite non 1911s to shoot hands down

Good luck. I think it was Gil Hebard who said a good stock pistol would get you into Sharpshooter, at which time you should consider having it accurized.

You did well with the GoldMatch.
However, eventually, you'll still need to have it worked over by a top gunsmith to rebarrel it and tune it. The Kimber costs more than the RO, and you'll still have to invest $$$ to get into the Master class, then $$$$ for high-master.

All that work on a Kimber will do me no good if I cannot see the target well enough. I am in my mid fifties and the target is just too hazy. I would like to break into 2700 competition sometime soon and was wondering if I could get an RMR installed on the Kimber Classic Gold Match. I installed a red dot onto a Ruger MK IV. My scores went up dramatically, I am hoping for the same on the Kimber.

You can go that route, but I highly recommend a set pf prescription shooting glasses. You don't need to see the target clearly...you must see the sights with razor-sharp clarity. Try www.customsightpicture.com, Dr. Toler knows what he's doing.
