I Finally bought a 686-4!

I have wanted to add a 4" .357 to the family for quite a while. I was out at the Valley Forge Gun Show this weekend, saw a couple of 686s in decent shape, one like new with lock and one a bit dinged up but no lock. They wanted over $ 550.00 for them:what:

I wound up buying this private sale via my gun club for $352 total.

Looks real clean, cylinder is nice and tight side to side and front to back. Top strap and forcing cone are like new. The side plate and screws are pristine. The only part that seems to have any wear at all is the rear sight white outline is worn off (otherwise the sight blade is perfect).

I'd be surprised if this had more than 100 rounds of .38 spl. wad cutter through it.

Yes, the price was right!

The last .357 I owned was a pinned and recessed model 19 back in the early 90s. I sold it to an acquaintance 4 boxes of 110 gr. shells before the forcing cone split! I haven't owned a .357 since then. Nothing against them, just worked out that way.

I did some research and decided that, for me, a stainless 4" 686 was the best overall value as a shooter .357 (initial quality, accuracy, portability, ease of shooting, durability and potential resale value)

The only hard part was waiting a year for one to turn up at a good price.

I can't wait to get this out to the range!
 
Yep - Congrats on a fine purchase. We'll be looking forward to the range report :D
 
I bought a 4" S&W-686 in, IIRC, 1983. Over the years it has aquired a set of Hogue finger grips and a Millet red dot with B-Square mounts. Thousands of rounds later, it's still tight and accurate. Lots of people have tried to buy this gun but it's still in my safe. You'll enjoy your -686. Give us a range report when you get it to the range.
 
First thing I thought after reading your post was: "you SOB". Your a thief, plain and simple. I am truely jealous. Enjoy it and never sell it.

No, I have no intention of ever selling this one. I have sold a few guns in the past and have regretted most sales. I still grouse over the stainless Colt govt model 70 I sold in 92 (to buy a glock 19 and a Grendel P10:rolleyes:)

The 686 joins my .44 Mountain, Colt Cobra, and Ruger Super Single Six in my "no sell" revolver category.

I will post a range review asap.
 
Once Upon A Time...

My 4" 686 no dash also doesn't have a white outline rear sight - doesn't look like it ever did, but I just ordered a WO blade from Brownell's 2 days ago. It's backordered, but I've had it for 10 years without it & a bit more time is no problem. As an aside, I bought it off of Auction Arms for $250. The reason is went so cheap is that it had a departmental number on the frame (like Guillermo's), and several comments were made about it on the auction page. It was as new otherwise and after replacing the trigger return spring with a 14 lb Wolff, the DA pull can only be described as sensual... :cool:
