I've been reading, learning, and looking on this forums and others, and yesterday I finally bought my first handgun. I'm the proud owner of a Ruger Mark III 22/45 bull barrel. I can't wait till this weekend when my wife and I go to the range. It might look like just a standard Mark III 22/45 to most, but to me it's the most beautiful of the bunch because it's mine.

congrats, and welcome to thr. that is a great choice, i have a few firearms but the ruger mark 2 of mine is one of my favorites. they are accuarte so fun to shoot. ammo is nice a nd cheap, and they are great guns to learn on!

I appreciate all your replies. When I first started my journey to handgun ownership is was kicked off by shooting my brother-in-laws Thompson with a .22 LR barrel and a 30/30 barrel. It had been a long time since I'd shot anything, and I had mainly shot long barreled guns when I was younger, but it got my blood pumping, so much fun. So I was thinking I'll get a .357, I fired a 30/30 from a handgun....Anyway after much reading on this and other forums, and a lot of advice from my wife, I left my machismo behind and conceded that a .22 LR would be best for me to learn to shoot a handgun with. I ultimately went with a Mark III because my wife grew up shooting a Mark II and this will eventually become her gun. When I get better with handguns, I'll move up to something bigger for myself. But as I've read over and over better a well placed .22 than a missed big manly mans cartridge.

You also "done good" by selecting a .22. It is best if new shooters learn the fundamentals on a .22 and then work their way up to larger, centerfire calibers. One can certainly skip this first step and plunge right in, but it will be a lot more work getting there.

Congratulations & welcome.

Probably one of the best choices you could have made for a 1st ( or 2nd or 3rd etc, etc ) handgun.

Everybody should have a 22LR. And as a 1st handgun, just a great place to begin.

Enjoy,

Good for you! Trust me, I own a lot of guns (including 2 MkII's), and they are all the most beautiful because they are mine!

I never liked the take-down on the MkIII's but I'll admit it's a fine and fun shooter

It is more complicated than others, but once you know how to do it, it's not bad. Plus, it's a .22 pistol. There really isn't any particular need to take it down to clean very often. My one MkII has been cleaned maybe all of twice in 5 or 6 years, and it still shoots rings around everything else I own.
