I found an SP101 grip that works for larger hands.

Greetings all,

If you are a fan of the Ruger SP101, and happen to be a person of larger than average stature, it is possible that you have had a difficult time finding a grip that fills your hand properly.

I have tried the stock grip. It's way too small for me.
I have tried a full sized laminate grip from Badger Custom Grips, and it changed the grip angle to an angle I find unpleasant.
I tried a maple grip from Tim's workshop. It's beautiful, but again it did not fill my hand properly.
The closest I had come to a good grip was the Crimson Trace Laser Grip I had put on it. Again though, it didn't really feel right.

The bigger problem is that without a grip that really fit me well, I never had a proper trigger reach. I always had way too much finger through the trigger guard, and that will of course screw up my accuracy when firing.

Well on a whim, I decided to try the new Pachmayr Renegade laminate grip. I have to admit, it feels pretty good in the hand. There is enough palm swell to fill my hand, and enough meat on the web of the hand that it gives me a better (longer) trigger reach.

Since SP101 grips come up pretty regularly on THR, I thought I'd share. The fit and finish is nice, though I definitely prefer real wood rather than laminate wood.

For reference, I am 6'3" tall, about 200 lbs, and wear XL gloves. This grip seems to suit me, though I have not yet fired the gun with these grips. If you are a little larger than the average, you may want to consider this model.

They only cost me like $42 on Amazon.

Those are pretty good looking grips too.
I'll keep those in mind if I ever come across a SP101 at the right price some day.

I have the Hogue monogrip on my 3" SP101 and really like it. It fits my hand very well and makes the revolver a joy to shoot. Your grips look a lot prettier though.

That's a good looking grip, look very shoot-able. There isn't any extra sticking out the bottom of your hand either, sized just right!

I have hogue monogrips on mine and like them a lot, but like MCMXI said....those are a lot prettier

I've handled SP101's with the Hogue grip. This one seems to fill my hand better and is snag free, even with checkering.

For me, it's just a bit of a better option. I greatly prefer wood grips to rubber.

I own an SP101 in 22LR and the stock grip was just too short. I replaced it with the Hogue 81000. They can be had for ~$22 new and shipped on ebay. Definitely makes the gun more comfortable in the hand.

I have the same problem with small guns with small grips. I'm not able to fire a J-Frame Smith because the tip of my finger hits the frame way before the hammer falls.
Those are nice grips, but from the second photo, it looks like you still have too much finger on the trigger. I prefer grips that allow the first joint on my trigger finger to fall on the trigger automatically. With small guns, the Ruger LCR's grips come closest for me.

I do still have a bit too much finger sticking through the trigger guard, but this is a vast improvement from the other grips I've tried. It takes a lot less effort now to consciously keep the first joint of my finger on the trigger than before, and it doesn't force me to shift the gun oddly to get a proper pull.

You can imagine with how much finger I have on the trigger with this new grip, just how bad the old grips were for me. Frankly I'm surprised I could ever shoot the gun accurately, but I managed. It just rocked around in my hand a lot.

If I really want it perfect, then an L frame revolver with a fat grip on it works much better for me, or an N frame gun. This si a S&W 686+ with a Nill grip on it with a closed backstrap. This gun suits me very well, and I shoot this gun quite proficiently. However, I like having a smaller framed, and easily concealed revolver in my lineup also.

Nill Grips

Yesterday I was out banging around in the woods by myself and I decided to see how the new grip felt on the draw. So when I knew no one was anywhere around, I unloaded my SP101, put it back in the holster and practiced drawing and dry firing a few times. It pointed more naturally and felt like a better trigger stroke than it has ever before, and I noticed the front sight danced about less on the trigger pull than iin the past. I haven't had a chance to shoot this gun yet with these grips. I'm excited to though.

Just need to make time.

I've always liked that set of Nil's on your 686.

I'm sure the trigger felt better because you were probably able to pull it perfectly straight back instead of one side or the other slightly.
