I wanted to build some leather holster/belt sets as a hobby so I bought an Cimarron "Evil Roy" to use as a model. My first holster is about done but this weekend, I put the .45 in the holster for a day or two and when I pulled it out, the blue barrel, cylinder, and trigger guard had silver spots just in places. I first thought the finish had come off but I can't seem to feel an edge. It is almost like the bluing got discolored down the left side of the barrel, one side of the cylinder and some on the trigger guard. The case-hardening is fine.

The holster is lined with undyed calfskin. I bought the hides at a Tandy Leather Store. They are vegetable-tanned and what they use for gun leather. Is this a permanent condition or can the spots be removed? Has anyone ever run into this before?

My best guess is that there was something on the leather that reacted with the bluing. You can try blending in some cold blue, but you may have to refinish to get back to where you were. Most holster makers use a wooden mock up of the gun they are making the holster to fit for just this reason.

Not a Cimmaron, although I do go plinking along the Cimmaron river with it, but my Stoeger/Uberti 4 3/4" .45 Colt Peacemaker clone has blueing issues too!

All I can say about mine is to stay with the regular blue, and not the charcoal fire blue. I had previously owned a cheaper Uberti .44-40 Colt clone with standrd blue, and it held up quite decent. The charcoal blue is easy to wear off and some has turned plum already.

What finish is on the "Evil Roy" Cimmaron model?
