When I was 16 I recieved a Western Fields Model 30 bolt action 12ga shotgun. It was an inexpensive (cheap) gun marketed by Montgomery Wards. The bolt action was never dependable. It had a 2 round magazine and if both rounds were in the magazine it would not feed into the chamber. One round in the chamber and it would feed just fine. I didn't know much about shotguns when I was 16, so I would load one round in the mag. and one in the chamber and I had a 2 shot shotgun. I was satisfied. Now, some 60 years later, I have decided to see if anyone has any experience with this model and maybe has a solution to improve it.
I have learned that Montgomery Ward contracted with several manufactures to build shotguns under the name Western Field. I have also learned that my gun was made by Kessler Arms Co. Kessler identified this shotgun as a Model 30c. Kessler was only in business from 1951-1953. Numrich Gun Parts purchased Kessler's inventory and spare parts after the bankruptsy.
Numrich has most of the parts for my shotgun including a new magazine spring. I'm thinking of ordering the mag spring and trying it. If my mag spring is weak, that may explain why it won't feed properly if both rounds are in the magazine. Any help finding a solution is very much appreciated.
