In a few weeks my grandfather and i are going down to our land in Kentucky. Where he was going to show me the lines of our property since it is being willed to me. So i figured I would take this time and do a little rabbit and squirel hunting, so my grandma could make me some stew.

But of course both those seasons are closed that weekend.:banghead:

and i am not a direct dependant of my grandpa so i would have to pay
$32.50 for a 5 day liscence.:cuss:

well that was a good way to burst my bubble.

"...i(sic) would have to pay..." You're bubble is confused. Go take a hike with your grandpa and relish the fact that you can. Time spent with him just walking ain't bad.

ohh no, i still am excited to hang with my grandfather. just was excited for a little squirell stew. it'll be a good time since i have never really ventured the whole property. he has some great stories from he was a kid. like getting chased by mountain lions and stuff. so i am sure some of them will be brought up through our hike.

CROP DAMAGE!!!!!!!

i guess i would have to use the excuse they destroyed the whole dang field. since there are no crops to begin with:evil:

Yep, take the walk.
I'm the eldest and the only one that ever knew a grandparent, that grandmother died when I was 5. All I have are a few memories,or memories I want to have and stories. My sibs don't even have that.

I've always wished I could have known my grandparents. Mom's Dad in particular, the property, the blackberries, the sistern, and the game...bears, deer, quail...just point where, what, and when grandpa...I wanna hear...

i have been fortunate enough to know all my grandparents. and all of my great grandparents except for one who died only a few weeks before i was born. i am definatly looking forward to it. i guess we will just have to do it again so we can hunt.

grandpa

a good excuse for a two week grouse hunt in athens county ohio.( just to get in shape for your tour) i've found that those old fellows that grew up in that kind of country just walk and walk and.................;)

In a few weeks? Sounds like deer season to me. Maybe turkey season? What about feral hogs? Here in Texas hogs are fair game all year long!! Just get out and enjoy the time spent with Grampa. I never met one of my grandfathers, and the other fell victim to a severe head trauma when I was like 5. And less than $40 to hunt for a few days is chump change. Skip a pack a week, or get a 6-pack instead of a case, or pack a lunch, or 1 less round of sporting clays a week or find what works for you. You have a few weeks to prepare. Make lemonade out of the situation.

Sounds like you'll need to wear plenty of blaze orange on those walks. Enjoy your time and savor the memories.

deer season is right. first weekend of gun season. that's why rabbit and squirell are closed. i don't think we have pig around us. orange is a good idea. even though we have quite a bit of land no one should be hunting around there. but still wear the orange just in case.

B92LX,
Have you hunted there yet? I hunted in Kentucky this spring for turkey. The $20 fee for turkey was on top of the Non-Resident license that will set you back $115. That would make your 5 day license cost $147.50 + any agent fees (usually $1) and additional fees. The $115 license is good for the entire year so if you plan on hunting for more than small game its worth it. In fact, if you spend one day hunting with family and never fill a tag, its still worth it.
Figure even if you didn't have relatives there a hotel or cabin would set you back that much at least. Enjoy any time you can spend with family and friends.
Have fun,
Rupe

no never hunted there. but was just going to do some small game stuff. so i think that tag was like $32.50 for 5 days. i think it's a rip that i have to get a liscence on my own property but ohh well. i will come down another weekend for it.

Before my father died, I purchased a little pocket-sized digital recorder and recorded some of my last conversations with him (with his consent, of course). These are now precious to me, and I have converted them to CD in order for my grandchildren to hear his voice.
As we never know how long we have on this earth, I think that you would be well off recording some of your grandfather's tales, as when he is gone, they will be lost! Enjoy every moment you have with him, as life is precious.

I'm with the rest o' the bunch re: being with grampa. I never knew either of mine, although they said I was the apple of paternal gramps eye. I have old pics but no memories. Land is forever and so is huntin'. Savor the stew of grampa's memories, you can always tip a rabbitt, but gramps will move on someday.
