I've never sold a gun to someone I don't know. What should I be worried about? Should I write up an agreement ahead of time with blanks for prices/ trades and names? Any advice on how to effectively sell as an individual at the gun show would be most helpful as well.

I've sold two guns at the local gun show,to the same guy. He always has his table right by the entrance door to the hall the show is held, and gets first look at guns guys are bringing in,and both times he asked me right away what i had to sell when he seem mine. A good sale is when the buyer and seller are both happy with the deal.

Dont jump at the first sign of interest, get a good deal for your weapon system. I would put it about $50 -100 over what you want and let that be your start.

If you're uncomfortable selling to a stranger, then you can either sell to an FFL at the show, or write up a bill of sale with gun, serial number, etc., and the buyer and seller names and maybe a DL # or similar

That's what I have done in the past. However I don't have the cash to get what I want right now. So I'm sellin' one I don't use to fund one that I hope I will.

Decide on your asking and selling prices before you get to the show. Basically, decide what is the least you will take for the rifle. That will likely be the number that you will be considering if you sell to a FFL dealer. Be prepared to say No.

Put a for sale sign on the gun. I generally don't post price, but that is your call.

I follow my instincts on sales. You are not required to get a bill of sale/receipt, with identifying information of the buyer and seller, but it is not a bad idea. It frightens some sales away because they just don't want to give you that information.

I would ask if they are a state resident at a minimum and if they look young, I'd ask for a drivers license. It just depends on you. Follow the rules.

Thanks for the help guys! I went to the show and sold it today. That Marlin 1894SS was pretty, but she was a safe queen. I paid $550 A couple years ago I think. I sold it for $450.

I am dissappointed you did not try to sell it here. I would have given it a good home.

Sorry guys, I wanted the cash fast. I'm wanting a new pistol and needed the funds. Don't take it personal.

just a word of caution...I never used to get a bill of sale for private party transactions, but I ALWAYS will now. At the last 3 shows that I was at I was approached by folks wanting to buy without showing ID. In 2 of the 3 cases, I'm convinced it was a BATFE agent fishing for an arrest.

So,now I ALWAYS record the Driver's License or FFL of the buyer along with SN, make, model and a statement that says, "I <buyer> attest that I am legally eligible to posses firearms in the state of NC." I have the buyer sign. It's a fairly painless CYA measure.

If I know the person, then I don't bother with the paperwork.

I DO NOT fault the BATFE for monitoring Gun Shows. I think it's mostly a waste of time, but it's their job.
