Specialist David Arnold cleans and inspects M-4 and M-16 rifles before taking them to a shooting range to check their sights.

Heck, WD-40 was our friend on range day. If ya give your bolt carrier enough of a squirt that it splatters a little bit on your first few rounds, it cleans up quick and slicker'n a whistle when it's time to turn in at the armory.

(What I don't understand is why anyone *other* than who the weapon is being issued to would be cleaning them and checking the sights????)

You know shooting is fun and I even find cleaning fun when I shoot for sport and fun on my own time. As soon as you HAVE to do it, especially for serious social reasons it becomes WORK and WORK IS NOT FUN. I have the graphs, charts and data to prove this.

I like to be on my own schedule and as soon as I have to do something regularly no matter how fun I sort of don't like it anymore. I could get a job test driving Porsche's for a living and after a year or so it would be a "Job".

That's the way we did it when I was in, supervisors and all. They see a lot worse treatment than that.

There's nothing exciting about cleaning a pile of weapons, or even just cleaning your own - not in the military. Then again, I never found AR's to be very exciting, even with a burst switch.

I can recall being assigned to work parties to clean rifles not assigned to anyone in the armory. Once it becomes part of your job, it loses its glamour.

I also recall as the assigned gunner on the machinegun team, I had 3 machineguns to take care of, plus my pistol, plus all the tripods, T&E's and tools . . . at the end of the cleaning day, I smelled like dry cleaning solvent and CLP. And after a few months, having to maintain all those became an annoying task.

I agree completely, back home, cleaning my personal weapons is enjoyable, almost a meditative task, here, cleaning my SAW, M240B, and M9 is just plain boring, and tedious, yes i know that my life depends on them and I clean them so that you could eat off the insides (i just care about functionability, not appearence) but doesn't change the fact that i don't enjoy the task.

Or maybee it becuase working properly is priotiry number 1, and looking nice is priority number 0.

Looks to me like the platoon just finished cleaning their weapons, and left Private Snuffy to guard them while they went to lunch. The NCO in charge of the arms room isn't ready to take any weapons yet.

That would be boring, eh?

Personnally, I think it's 5pm on Friday, he's just finishing weapon #1, and realizes he's not going to the EM Club tonight.........
