I was looking for a bolt-action 30-06 or 308 to have as a plinker/shtf rifle. Did a lot of searching here and other forums. Was looking at new from Buds or a decent looking used locally. Found a nice used Howa 1500(asking $399) and a used Savage 111 with scope(asking $319) at a local shop. They also had a very nice shape Savage 99 in 308, octogon barrel for $499. Thought I would end up buying one of those. Decided to check local pawnshop. Found a excellent shape Howa 1500, in 30-06 with a Nikkon Stirling 3x9x42 scope on it. They were asking $399 so I asked if that was firm. Lady came back and said "30% off or $279". I took a deep breath and said sold! Found out later Nikko Stirling is a $100+ new scope with a decent rep so feel like I got really lucky. Will try and get out to shoot asap. Sorry to be so long winded.

The Howa is a decent rifle. I built my wife's .270 on a Howa action. Im very pleased with how it turned out.

I've got a Howa youth in 7mm-08, it's nice, but not particularly accurate. Needs trigger work. And I think the Nikko scope that came on it has already crapped out.

I can't ever remember anyone saying anything bad about the Howa. A great hunting rifle at a modest price. Go for it...Essex
