I use my R55 (.22LR) almost exclusively on the bench, but I don't want to carry around sand bags. I'm shooting paper at 25 to 100 yards.
I've been searching and reading old threads and the impression I get is that I should be going for a Harris bipod with notched legs. I think a short one is what I'm after.

Unfortunately I don't know diddly about bipods.
Any recommendations, comments? Any tips for when I fit it?

I have the middle length Harris bipod that also has the "tilt" feature (it just allows you to tilt the gun to either side if on un-even ground, so the rifle can stay level.) and it seems really solid, stable, and durable, so far. Harris bipods are kinda pricey, and you can get a Shooter's Choice knockoff that seems to be identicle asfar as I can tell, for about 25% less, so that may be worth looking into. I would have probly gotten the Shooter's Choice insted, if I had been able to see and handle one before I bought the Harris, but I hadnt seen one in person, so really thought they would be a cheap knockoff, that wasnt as good, and end up being not worth as much as they still cost. That doesnt appear to be the case though, no that I have handled a couple at gun shows now. They seem to be identical, and just as well built, but without paying extra for the Harris name.

Others with more/longer experiance with the 2 may know something I dont though, so dont just take my word on the Shoter's Choice, as it's just my impression, with no actual experiance with them.

Oh thank god!

I thought you were talking about an R-55 Sporter. The heresy! :D

Sorry it has taken long to get this sorted, but I recently got a present from my sister: a Harris bipod and flat fore-end adapter. I only have these low quality pics taken on my phone, but I can vouch that it was easy to fit and works as expected.

The bipod is the 6"-9" non-swivelling but with notched legs, model number HBRM
The adapter plate is a number 9 (code is HB9)

I'll be testing it at 50 yards with good ammo next time I am at the range.

If you are hunting carry a back pack. Put the skinning knife and deer bag in their. Also a sandwich or two and some gloves.

When you get a shot that needs a rest use a tree or limb. If you have neither slip off your pack and use it as a rest. Lay prone and take your shot. Forget that darn bipod. They are just expensive, heavy and they are awkward. Always remember, "Less is more".

I put a 6-9" Harris with swivel and notch features on my 10/17HM2 and it seems to be doing well, but if I were to do it over again I would probably save a couple bucks and just use a Shooters Ridge copy instead. The Harris is nice, but overkill for a target rimfire IMO.
