I can't find a good pic to post but does anybody know if the rifles used on the original Planet of the Apes movies were a real model or a Hollywood makeup?

I'm pretty sure it is only a prop. The closest looking thing I've seen is the Hipoint carbine. It's cheap too, so you're in luck.

They probably intended it as something akin to an SKS, by the look of it.

Edit: just read that the rifles used were carved entirely from wood and painted to look like metal. That settles that.

The rifle from the second film was actually functional:

From my eye, the action resembles a modified M1 Carbine with the gas system ommitted. In fact, I'm fairly certain that's what it is. Back when that movie was made, M1 Carbines were still plentiful, too.

two versions: "hero" gun that fired blanks (appears to be Universal carbine action in a thumbhole stock) and "background" gun inert or dummy for extras in the background. IIRC they also used the Danish Madsen SMG in a 'gorilla' stock also.
