For the last month I've been going back and forth on what to get.

Yugo SKS:
Pros---1. Bayo and launcher are pretty cool.
2. Metalwork appears to be quite nice.
3. Price
4. Plenty of accesories.

Cons:---1. Low capacity if you keep the cool stuff on it.
2. Non chrome-lined bore.
3. Heavy weight

SAR-1:
Pros---1. High capacity and cheap mags.
2. Chrome-lined bore.
3. Looks like a real AK.

Cons:---1. Appears crudely made.
2. Higher price.

Which would you get and why?
Or do I just forget about it and get a Mini-30?

Also---how hard on the guns is the cheap steel-cased ammo I've been seeing.

Thanks for any help----this is driving me nuts.

I'd take the SAR-1. It feeds from readily available cheap 30-rounders, and the AK is a classic design. Best of all, the Liberals hate the AK-47 worse than vampires hate garlic.

"Crudely made" is not a handicap when talking about the AK-47. They're supposed to be that way. Makes for a great beater rifle, and it'll be as reliable as a milled Bulgie AK or a VEPR.

I went with the Yugo SKS. The price is great on these right now (especially if you have a C&R) and most are in incredible condition. Plus, you have a bit of history with the gun (albeit minor). Top it off with the "cool factor" of the bayo and GL, I love it.

Everyone has their own priorities, but just sharing my opinion.

Either way you can't go wrong!

I had an SAR-1 for awhile, sold it to help finance an ARS FAL. It was not the prettiest rifle in my safe but it made up for it's cosmetic shortcomings by going bang every time the trigger was pulled and I found it to be combat accurate.

SKSs are nice, but a 30 round mag of 762x39 is pretty darn good too.

For my money, the SAR-1

Get them both. I purchased a SAR 1 and never looked back. IMHO the quality of the SKS is higher. They don't make them anymore because they are more expensive to manufacture than the AK/AKM but their is nothing the matter with them.

I went with the Yugo SKS and I couldn't be happier with it. It's in awesome shape and it shoots great. Granted it would be nice to have the 30 rnd detachable mag, but I picked up a bunch of stripper clips cheap, which makes reloading a breeze.

Once i get some spare cash (Which will not be anytime soon as I'm ramping up to start Highpower in the spring) I'll be picking an SAR-1 up.

The old saying definately holds true: So many guns wanted, so little cash!

Tuff question

If money was not a factor I'd buy the SAR-1 because it has capabilities that the SKS doesn't have like compactness and larger magazine capacity plus you can mount one of those neat Russian scopes (mounts) on it. But I would certainly purchase an SKS WITH chromed bore as soon as possible.:)

I would lean toward an SKS: dirt cheap, well made, solid, and my Yugo seemed almost unused. And don't forget, its just a plinker. Buy something cheap to have fun with, and save towards a more accurate rifle.

Whichever you chose, don't waste your $ on a mini30!!! I shot one this w/e with a scope, and it couldn't do better than 8" at 100 yrds!

It would be a bit harder to choose if we were considering a more modern chrome lined SKS versus the SAR1.

I really like the solid built qualities and looks of the SKS, especially the paratrooper versions.

At the same time I doubt if you were to ever find someone who totally wore out an SAR1, other than shooting out the barrel. They are remarkably durable.

Yugos are nice, but given the choice the SAR1 would follow me home.

If my police chief is nice enough to give me a class A or B liscense I'll probably get an SAR. If not then I'll get the SKS.

Well, if you've only got $150 and you need something now, looks like you'll be getting an SKS. If you can swing the higher $$$, the SAR has a lot going for it over the SKS.
