I've had my Mossberg 500 for a little over 3 years...shot it some, but never a whole lot.

This summer, a group of guys I practice with expressed interest in doing some stuff with shotguns...we're a competition group heavily influenced by IDPA, so we started shooting some cardboard with slugs (good thing I had some 1" tape around).

I talked to the Discipline Chairman at my club, and got use of some donated steel, constructed a portable stand out of 2x4's for posts, and 4x4's for the target "rail". Now I can't get enough birdshot to satisfy the fun of knocking plates off this stand.

My 18.5" Smoothbore Mossberg has been "tacti-cooled". From rear to front:
- 12" Hogue LOP stock
- "Innovative" single point sling attachment from a friend
- "Innovative" AK Sling, self-modified for Single Point use
- Weaver Mount and EOTech Holosight
- TacStar 6-shell Side Saddle
- Factory Heat Shield
- Surefire Dedicated Forend
- TruGlow Tritium Backup Iron Sight

For those that are interested in this sort of thing:
- She's blowing the A out of the A-Zone with slugs at 25 (both with S&B and the budget Remington 15-pack available at Wally World)
- I'm still experimenting with 00 Buckshot loads, but so far I'm getting just under 4" patterns at 10 yards with Federal (tactical reduced recoil loads) and bulk S&B 00. I need to spend some more time at 15 yards with various loads I'm in the 8-12" range depending on the load.

For birdshot, I'm really liking the Winchester Super Handicap 7 1/2, 1300 FPS, although the Wal-Mart Value Packs don't do too bad inside 15 yards.

The best part...I've found that I'm a "freak of nature". I don't feel the recoil...I mean, I know it's there, but no pain and not a mark on me the next day, even when I've shot 30+ slugs and a similar number of birdshot, and even with 3" Magnums, although the muzzle flip is definitely more pronounced with the 3" Magnum slugs.

There's got to be some 12-step program somewhere :D.

If there is a 12 step program for shotgunners out there, please do not tell my wife.....

Congrats and Mazeltov. Now go shoot some more....

If you're really addicted your going to start buying some pretty exotic stuff soon, like autoloaders and double barrels. You just won't be able to help it!

re: Replies

I'm interested in the TAP Loads, but probably as more of a Reference Load, they're pretty pricey.

I have to say, that the good news to my bank account is that I'm really addicted to the SHOOTING part of it (although I can see me going through shotshells like water).

I might like to get another Mossberg so I can have a 2nd pump...I'm looking at a 20" 500 that will be comparatively simple. The theory being, that for match conditions the Surefire Forend weight is slowing me down a little, and the 20" barrel will perhaps give a little extra velocity and maybe even some slightly tighter patterns with the birdshot. I will probably put the 12" LOP stock on it (raptor arms), a side-saddle, and I'm thinking of maybe going with the Ghost Ring sight setup this time.

I must confess I do have a Tromix Saiga-12 on order with a Halo Forend. With domestic 10rd Mag's available, I couldn't resist the idea, and I'm very familiar with the AK platform. Now I just need a 2nd to carry it for me :D.

I'm very much hoping that the weather lets us out there one more time this weekend. In addition to the 52 Pickup knockdown plate setup, I ran across some standards from the Chuck Taylor Combat Master test that look like fun. He specifies 00 Buckshot, but we'll probably try it with slugs...quicker to tape the one slug hole.

Addiction Update

For this weekend I think we're going to try a little man-on-man action (side-by-side arrays of course ;)).

I'll need to pick up another 4x4, but I've negotiated use of additional steel plates. Intent is to arrange two sets of 4, with a "finish plate" in the center. Shooters will load 2, reload 3 (or more), and shoot outside in until their 4 plates are down and 1 has knocked over the "finish plate".

Now to build that Birdshot Concession Stand :D.

p.s. I'm not just an addict, I'm a "pusher" :D.
