I've had my Mossberg 500 for a little over 3 years...shot it some, but never a whole lot.
This summer, a group of guys I practice with expressed interest in doing some stuff with shotguns...we're a competition group heavily influenced by IDPA, so we started shooting some cardboard with slugs (good thing I had some 1" tape around).
I talked to the Discipline Chairman at my club, and got use of some donated steel, constructed a portable stand out of 2x4's for posts, and 4x4's for the target "rail". Now I can't get enough birdshot to satisfy the fun of knocking plates off this stand.
My 18.5" Smoothbore Mossberg has been "tacti-cooled". From rear to front:
- 12" Hogue LOP stock
- "Innovative" single point sling attachment from a friend
- "Innovative" AK Sling, self-modified for Single Point use
- Weaver Mount and EOTech Holosight
- TacStar 6-shell Side Saddle
- Factory Heat Shield
- Surefire Dedicated Forend
- TruGlow Tritium Backup Iron Sight
For those that are interested in this sort of thing:
- She's blowing the A out of the A-Zone with slugs at 25 (both with S&B and the budget Remington 15-pack available at Wally World)
- I'm still experimenting with 00 Buckshot loads, but so far I'm getting just under 4" patterns at 10 yards with Federal (tactical reduced recoil loads) and bulk S&B 00. I need to spend some more time at 15 yards with various loads I'm in the 8-12" range depending on the load.
For birdshot, I'm really liking the Winchester Super Handicap 7 1/2, 1300 FPS, although the Wal-Mart Value Packs don't do too bad inside 15 yards.
The best part...I've found that I'm a "freak of nature". I don't feel the recoil...I mean, I know it's there, but no pain and not a mark on me the next day, even when I've shot 30+ slugs and a similar number of birdshot, and even with 3" Magnums, although the muzzle flip is definitely more pronounced with the 3" Magnum slugs.
There's got to be some 12-step program somewhere .
Safe Shooting,
